Iowa Election Results

Iowa was once an obviously purple state, but Republicans have amassed power in recent elections. Frustrated Democrats have watched from the sidelines as conservatives privatized the state’s Medicaid system and passed a law that would impose sweeping restrictions on abortion.

This election could cement Iowa’s rightward shift, or vault Democrats back to power.

Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican who ascended to her post last year when her predecessor became an ambassador, was elected to serve her first full term. During the campaign, Ms. Reynolds touted her small-town roots and accused her Democratic opponent, Fred Hubbell, of being an out-of-touch elitist.

President Trump’s trade policies have stung Iowa farmers, and Democrats hoped that a backlash could help them unseat Representative Rod Blum, a conservative Republican.

State Representative Abby Finkenauer, a Democrat who supports abortion rights and labor unions, was able to do so, defeating Mr. Blum in this slice of northeast Iowa that includes liberal-leaning cities and large expanses of corn and soybean fields.

Along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive from New York, Ms. Finkenauer, 29, will be one of the first women younger than 30 to be elected to Congress.

Cindy Axne, a Democratic businesswoman who has worked in state government, defeated Representative David Young to serve this district that includes Des Moines, its suburbs and conservative small towns near the Missouri River. A conservative Republican, Mr. Young won by 14 percentage points in 2016, but an energized Democratic base and farmers’ anxiety about President Trump’s trade policies likely worked against him this year.

Steve King, the Republican incumbent, defeated his opponent, J.D. Scholten, a Democrat and former professional baseball player. Few forecasters expected a competitive race in this normally deep red district in rural northwest Iowa, but Mr. King’s hardline anti-immigrant views and inflammatory statements during the campaign drew criticism from across the political spectrum.
