Maryland Election Results
The Maryland contest for governor offers voters an unusual contrast. The Republican incumbent, Gov. Larry Hogan, is a popular figure who has supported environmental measures and distanced himself from President Trump on issues like immigration.
His Democratic opponent, Benjamin T. Jealous, is a former head of the N.A.A.C.P. whose strongly progressive positions include calls for single-payer health care and tuition-free college. Mr. Jealous would be the state’s first African-American governor if he wins, but Mr. Hogan has maintained a comfortable lead in the polls. Like many states, Maryland has seen a surge in early voting, with turnout running at double the rate of the 2014 midterms.
