President Trump won Iowa by nine points in 2016, but polls in the final weeks of the 2020 campaign showed him in a dead heat with Joseph R. Biden Jr. The president prevailed, clinching a victory over Mr. Biden and winning Iowa's six electoral votes. Read more

The Senate race, which had become one of the most expensive in the country, was also neck and neck. Senator Joni Ernst, the Republican incumbent, beat out Theresa Greenfield, a Democratic real estate executive who outraised Ms. Ernst in the third quarter by a $28.7 million to $7.2 million margin.

For decades, Iowa voters have declined to approve a constitutional convention to alter the state’s guiding principles.
