Rhode Island Election Results

Joseph R. Biden Jr. snagged Rhode Island's four electoral votes. The state's voters have favored the Democratic candidate in every presidential election since 1988. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state by more than 15 percentage points. Read more

Democrats also won the Senate race and two congressional races.

While the makeup of the state’s political representation was unlikely to shift, voters did approve a change to something else at the heart of the state: its name. The only ballot initiative asked voters whether Rhode Island’s official name should be changed from "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" to simply "State of Rhode Island."

The initiative comes amid a national reckoning over race. But when voters were last presented with the name-change in 2010, more than 75 percent rejected the measure. — NICHOLAS BOGEL-BURROUGHS Read less
