I'm a tech geek and try just about everything for every type of technology. I've tried most of the outdoor wireless camera's and these are tops. The picture quality is great. If you don't want to pay a monthly subscription, they have a MicroSD slot to capture your video's and images. The app is very user friendly and the options are through the roof. The battery life is at least 2x of the Google Outdoor Wireless cameras. What's amazing is the price is much less than the well known brands. If there was 1 thing I had to gripe about, it's the MicroUSB port for charging. Would prefer USB C, but not a showstopper.

Somewhat unrelated, I checked to see if they have smart light bulbs, in which they did. I replaced my outdoor garage lights and they work within the same app as the camera and easy to program on and off times. I'm going to put one above our front door as well.

I also installed the Doorbell and works great! No, it's not pretty like the Google and others but the overall quality is top notch and again, the price you cannot beat.

TP-Link Tapo has really done their homework and I'm going to continue to apply their products inside and outside of my home.

Don't let the lower cost fool you!

I bought the 2 pack Tapo security camera last month as a upgrade from a similar camera. On my review of that order, I noted that I planned to expand my system with more cameras in the future . About a month has gone by and my feelings for this system are still the same. I added this OUTDOOR camera to replace an older camera on my driveway. The COLOR night time view literally blew me away. At first , I started getting too many false alerts picking up cars on the road. I then made a "BOX" for the motion sensing that didn't include the road...Boom..No more false alerts.. I did notice if I enable the " AI "mode for vehicles..It still picks up the cars that I didn't include in my motion area I chose...it seems Like it overrides the box and looks at the whole screen. This was easily fixed by disabling the AI for AUTOs. Setup was a breeze , just adding it to my other 2 Tapo cameras . Details are clear and I can easily read a license plate anywhere in my driveway. Alerts are sent almost instantly , and I will probably activate the free trial on this camera for offline storage. Remember to buy the 256 gb SD card when you buy these cameras. 2 screws must be removed to put the SD card in , and they are tiny tiny screws. Once you insert the card , you will be good to go. The software will format the card , and you can choose 24/7 recording , or motion activated recording. Record the motion clips that you want , save them to memory , then go to memory and you can view , download , or delete the clips to your phone. You can do all of this without a subscription. It's a great addition to my security system , and I plan to add the Battery Powered cameras in time so I can view my backyard . Tapo has proven to be a great family of security cameras for all situations. Whether it a baby monitor , outdoor , wireless , battery powered, or motion tracking , this collection is great and all work together with one well written ,easy to use app. Keep up the great work Tapo !

UPDATE : After a couple of months use , I thought I would add to this review. Now , someone user left a Lengthy review and 90 percent of it is user error. You can EASILY record video to your phone from the SD card without removing anything. If you get a notification ,
So .... The way to save videos does actually vary between my indoor and outdoor cameras .
The Indoor cameras have 3 dots after the clip , and if you select the 3 dots it gives you the option to DOWNLOAD the clip . Selecting this DOWNLOADS the clip to the MEMORY of your SD CARD ... Then if you look up toward the top of the screen .. You will be able to select " Memory " and all the clips you downloaded will be here .... Selecting the clip you want will give you the option to delete , view , or even Download this video to you phone .

NOW ... the Outdoor camera has changed a little bit on how to do this without a subscription....When you are watching the selected video , you must press the little camera button while viewing the video , then press it again to stop the recording ... It will the save the clip you recorded to the " MEMORY " section of the SD CARD.. At this point you can click on the clip to view , delete , or DOWNLOAD it to your phone! It's 2 easy steps to save it on your phone...Once you know how to do it , it's very easy....Don't believe the users that say you can't save clips to your phone ..

Now for an actual small issue I had . My outdoor camera has an occasional issue ...I attribute this to the distance from my router. Last week , the spotlight stayed on for a couple days???...I unplugged the unit..Rebooted it...multiple times and it was not working correctly... I will admit I was a little upset..but I decided to do a factory reset by pushing the reset button that's in the SD card cover...That was the best thing I could have done ..I reconnected it to my app ..And the camera is now working correct again.... No dropouts , Motion Spotlight works , and I am happy it was just a factory reset that it took to fix it .. It's been working good for 2 weeks straight now ...We did have a power outage a couple weeks ago , and I think that may have messed my outdoor camera up a bit ..Overall...I still think it's the best budget camera system you can get.. No monthly fees and still does everything I want it to do .

After months of use, I came up with the following way to set my camera up as the best for my driveway ,and sidewalk . I DISABLED motion sensing , as ANY motion including trees , shadows , distant cars , would always trigger alerts , I disabled the vehicle sensing as it would alert me of all the cars on the road .. I set " Person " alert and this picks up all " people " riding or walking and works perfect ... The other setting I enabled was " Line crossing " and made a line that gives me a notification if anything crosses the middle of my driveway . The combo of Line crossing , and Person alert has made this system work the way I wanted it to .. I see my driveway , and the road but do not get alerts for the traffic on the road .. Only if they pull in my driveway ... The person detection seems to work great when a person is walking anywhere ... It took a little bit of playing to reduce false alerts ... But now that I have it tweaked out , it is an amazing system to have.

Magnets make mounting and aiming simple

Really neat mounting idea coupled with a wide FOV and good clarity. Using magnets made installation quick and easy. I have one mounted in the yard, about 50' from the base station on a tree. Camera features, connectivity, configuration options, and quality are great. Battery life is also great even with the busy road I live on constantly triggering the camera (I fixed the trigger area eventually :) The magnet makes aiming the camera and tilting it as you desire very easy.
Why did it lose a star? The magnetic mounting works within a narrow range. It is fully designed to be mounted similar to the picture, camera in cup at a modest angle. If this fits your need, this works fantastic. For me, more mounting angle options would help. As camera angle in the cup increases, the camera doesn't stay aimed, it oozes down. I worked with it and adapted the tree such that the camera is at a modest angle.

I really like this camera. At first it was frustrating, because I kept getting a pink/purple hue. I could reboot and it would go away, but always came back. I really liked the picture quality, ease of setup, magnetic attachment (very strong) and no subscription required for common AI features. So, I decided to reach out to support to see if I had a defective model or if I was doing something wrong. Support responded quickly with a request for the information that they needed that I didn’t provide already. Once I responded, my ticket Immediately went to an engineer and they advised me to update the firmware. They had just released a firmware update that addressed the issue. The support process was very efficient and professional. The camera has been working perfectly ever since the update.

I came here to buy this after it was ranked first in a New York Times review of security cameras. Not only did it finish first it was also the cheapest.

This camera replaces a previous cheap model that has since disappeared from Amazon. That experience was maddening. Flakey and limited software, intermittent WIFI signal, constant false notifications.

This camera is mounted in the same spot and connected to the WIFI instantly. The software is simple and intuitive to use. The speaker is a little poor quality but I'm using it as driveway surveillance and have no plans on using the speaker.

The image is very clear and downloads are simple and flawless. I have yet to figure out how to delete files on the SD card but with a 64 GB card I had kicking around and installed, I really don't need to worry about. The Activity and Privacy Zones (areas to watch and areas to ignore) work great. I'm able to cut out the front street traffic and identify only movement in the yard and driveway. The microphone is very sensitive.

What a wonderful package for such a good price. I'll likely buy a couple of their solar units for mounting high on trees to watch all my good neighbours out walking their dogs...and the rare punk looking for Ford pickups to steal.

One quick picky thing for the manufacturer. Please don't tighten the screws to the SD card door so tight. It was a struggle to remove even with the perfect sized Phillips screwdriver. Other than that, great product!

Llevo casi 6 meses con la cámara y puedo decir que funciona Excelente! la aplicación es súper fácil de utilizar, se configura rápidamente y puedes definir las áreas de detección de movimiento y hacer zoom en tiempo real y en la grabación, lo mejor es que graba videos cortos del movimiento sin necesidad de pagar por alguna membresía, la calidad de video es buena y tiene la opción de grabar en 2K.

Es una muy buena cámara para exteriores, yo la tengo instalada en un pasillo del patio en dónde le da el sol directo sólo por un momento en la mañana y no tiene mucha protección para la lluvia, la verdad es que ha funcionado sin ningún problema, el único detalle es que si vas a utilizar almacenamiento con microSD asegúrate de comprar una memoria que soporte altas temperaturas, en mi caso había comprado de las estándar y se me echaron a perder dos en un mes por las altas temperaturas que se alcanzan cuándo le da el sol a la cámara, la camara resiste muy bien el sol pero las tarjetas no.
