Poor design of air intake makes it only suitable for use in the middle of a room.
3 out of 5 stars
Poor design of air intake makes it only suitable for use in the middle of a room.
I bought this for use in my bedroom, although it's a little overkill for the space, I was fine with that as long as it preformed well. One thing I failed to notice, and I wish I had, was that the main air intake is on the back of the unit and the front of it is just a blank piece of plastic. The major problem with this is that if you place it against a wall (like a normal human would) on a desk or a shelf in my case, or something like that, instead of the middle of the room, then the main air intake will be blocked! There are smaller intakes on the side, but it would have to run twice as long just to do the same job as it would if the main intake was not against the wall blocking the airflow. Maybe if you live a life where you pile things in a heap in the middle of the floor of rooms with cords and hoses running everwhere, then go ahead and throw this on top of the pile and it will actually work as intended, or if you want to sit it on a pedestal in the middle of the room and use it as a conversation piece, then by all means proceed, but if you are like most humans, you will place it against the wall in some fashion, be it floor, shelf, desk, end table etc., especially if you are using the drain hose and not the bucket. The manual states that it needs 8" of clearance just to get the air into it, again it doesn't pull air in from the front for some dumb reason, and the unit is 15" long meaning that it needs to take up 2' of space from the wall, and its still pulling air in from behind it, not the actual space you want to dehumidifiy. That's right, for it to work correctly you have to face it AWAY from the room you want to dehumidifiy, effectively the rear (with cords, hoses and all the rest) is actually the front, and boy is it ugly. This thing is assbackwards, literally.Does it work? Sure. Does it have to make noise longer reducing its lifespan, use more electricity and work harder while sticking out 25 inches into my room and facing backwards to work as intended? It sure does. I guess some people will say, "Just turn it around and face the rear forward", but this thing is supposedly for residential use, aka your home. It's already bad enough that it looks like a mop bucket, which by the way the handle only folds to the front, in case you ever momentarily forgot how much it looks like a mop bucket, the handle will be dangling there to remind you. They at one point had older models in black, which looked way better and you did not have to clean every day just to keep White, why they dont offer this one in black is beyound me. Now, I have to show the cords hoses and all the other stuff too just for it to work as effectively as it should? This kids, is what is referred to as design flaw. Somewhere along the way, be it a corporate board room or a bunch of dudes with too many degrees, they forgot to ask a normal human in a normal house what they thought, and that's how we got here. The reviews all say it works great, I'm sure it does, but I'll never know because I'm not putting it in the middle of any room in my house, pointing it backwards and then running cords and hoses all across the floor to it so that it preforms at its best, it's just not going to happen. It will go up against my wall, on a shelf, with the cords and hoses hidden behind it where they can't be seen, and that is the level it will prefrom at for me and most other human beings in a human house, that level is the real level of its performance as far as I, and im sure most people, are concerned. This was not at all designed with that understanding, which is strange because it has the word residential right on it.Anyway, I'm just writing the review I wish I had read before I bought it based on the good reviews about how well it worked, which left out how it had to be positioned to achieve those results, aka in a manner that no sane person would in their house. I will leave a picture of the actual front of this unit, the side that should face the area you want to dehumidifiy, the real front face, if you want it to work as well as all the reviews say and not have to have it sticking two feet out from the wall into your room.In case someone from Midea reads this, the air intake (and only the air intake, no ports, cords, hoses, ugly branding etc.) should be on the front of the unit, so that it faces into the room we want to dehumidifiy, not away from it. It should not have to be placed away from the wall to function nor should it pull air in from behind it, but should instead pull air in from in front of it, which will almost always be the area we are trying to dehumidifiy, not the space behind it. Additionally, it should be offered in black and maybe have the handle fold to the rear where it can be hidden instead of flopping halfway down the front making it look more like a mop bucket than it already does. You have made a residential product, so please always consider how this will appear in someone's home where they have to see it everyday and make adjustments with that in mind as to how it will function as opposed to using it in some other setting. Please understand that "residential" means our home and that it should be designed to look AND function in that setting, not an office or Industrialized setting. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go figure out how I'm going to build an enclosure around this thing that will allow me to place it on a shelf against the wall, which will then force me to have the ugly rear with the ports, cords, hoses and all the rest facing out into my room. Maybe the enclosure I now have to design and build will hide it all to make it bearable enough to look at everday with the rear facing out, but this is not a problem that I wanted to have after buying such a pricey product, yet here I am with it, and with the accompanying headache.

I bought mine based upon Consumer Reports’ praise for these and reviews here and I haven’t been disappointed. You really couldn’t ask for a better dehumidifier. I recommend this thing to people all the time.

It’s quite compact but holds way more water than most dehumidifiers twice it’s size. It’s pretty quiet for what it is. It’s very effective. Got a dank mildewy basement apartment well under control in just a few days and kept it that way.

Brought a 1200 square foot apartment from 65+% humidity down to 35% in just under 4 days of running around the the clock and the mildew smell was 90% gone. Only had to empty the bucket once a day and the app tells you how full the bucket is at anytime and even estimates when it will be 100% full.

It switches itself off when it’s full obviously. It even has a spigot like thing on the bottom so you can connect a hose for continuous draining if needed.

It’s also quite reasonable on electricity use *for a dehumidifier*. Bear in mind, dehumidifiers do use a lot of electricity if you run them all the time. Think small window air conditioner, not box fan (in terms of electricity use) and you have the idea.

Really the only suggestion I could make as an improvement would be to add caster wheels to the bottom and perhaps a retractable power cord like some vacuums have.

Oh, and it even has an app to control it which works via Wi-Fi. So you could literally turn it on or off when you’re at a friends house or work if you want to. You can also set it to maintain a certain humidity automatically.

NOTE: It does NOT have wheels, but it does have sturdy handles. If you can lift 25 lbs off the floor with one hand, you’ll have no trouble carting it around or emptying the bucket. I would say that an elderly person or a child under 13 or so might struggle a bit to lift the the unit and move it around or lift the bucket when it’s full though.

If you plan to move it around a lot, you could put it on a sturdy, low profile platform with wheels. If the weight is an issue, just empty the bucket when it’s half-full and you’ll probably make do just fine.

Bear in mind, you do need to lift the entire unit UP and OFF of the bucket it sits upon in order to empty it.

If lifting 20-25 lbs with one arm isn’t an issue for you — then you’ve found your dehumidifier, your search is over. It’s a well-engineered and well-built unit that’s worth every penny. Buy this or one of the similar smaller or larger cube-shaped Midea units and I’m confident you’ll be pleased with the results.

I could not be happier with this dehumidifier. I live in a very humid, coastal area and can not stand the humidity. This keeps our family room, kitchen and hallway comfortable. Found it is well worth the money. I bought on Prime day so it was less. The bucket can get heavy when emptying it but love that you can roll it up to the sink! I may end up buying another one because it is so efficient and does exactly what I needed it to do! Company excellent to deal with and they were very patient with me during the registration process. I was slow understanding what was needed but they were kind and made me feel good as they guided me. It is nice to have kind people help you, especially these days!

I have used this dehumidifier for over a year and a half, both in my 800 sq. ft. cabin and in my 144 sq. ft. unheated storage shed. It has been effective and reliable, even in temperatures below 50 degrees F. It's a good fit for my cabin, but it's overpowered for my storage shed, causing it to cycle frequently.
Because I use it in an unheated space, I appreciate the automatic defrost (the compressor stops and the fan keeps running to let the room air defrost the evaporator, consuming 20W). It would be nice if there were an indication that it is in defrost mode (other than the fan running without the compressor). Like almost every other dehumidifier, it doesn't work well below about 45 degrees F, and not at all below freezing. It would be nice if it didn't even try to run below about 35 degrees; I have to use a smart plug with my home automation system to shut off power to it when the temperature gets that cold.
Because I use it when I am away, often for months at a time, I appreciate the continuous drain function (also protects it from damage due to freezing of accumulated water), the auto-start, and the remote monitoring and management using the Smart Home app. It would be even better if it were a Matter-compatible device, and if it reported temperature as well as humidity, but still it is a unit that keeps protecting my space indefinitely while I'm away.
In the low temperatures and humidities where I use this dehumidifier, it of course does not remove the rated (at standard conditions of 86°F, 80% RH) 20 pints/day, and is not nearly as efficient at removing water as it would be at higher temperatures and humidities. In my small storage shed with vapor barrier, there is not that much to remove anyway, so I appreciate being able to set the humidity level and having the unit shut off when it reaches the desired level. At a setting of 55% humidity and temperatures ranging mostly from 40 to 60, averaged over 19 days, it removed 76 cups of water and used 41.7 KWh of electricity. That's 0.55 KWh/cup, 4.0 cups/day, 2.22 KWh/day. Even at temperatures as low as 40 degrees, it was able to keep the humidity below 60% in this small space, which is at 70-80% without it running. It would reduce humidity below 50% most of the time if I set it that low, at the cost of higher energy consumption.
Like other compressor dehumidifiers, it's pretty loud -- not something I'd care to have running in the same otherwise-quiet room with me on a regular basis. It's also pretty heavy to carry up and down stairs. For my storage space, I'd like to find a unit like this with a quarter to half the capacity, but it seems like units in that range are Peltier/thermoelectric or dessicant types that are not as energy-efficient and lack crucial features like auto-defrost or auto-start.
Overall, this is a well-made, full-featured, reliable, and energy-efficient unit that works well for bigger rooms and smaller houses or cabins, even if they are unoccupied for long periods, even in cool temperatures. I recommend it.

Large capacity, easily emptied and does it pull water out of the air!! We had a different MIDEO dehumidifier that failed just under a year after we bought it. It worked fabulously but sadly it stopped working. Through the AMAZON link to the supplier we reached out and received a full refund ... so it only made sense to buy another from MIDEA. Our daughter had previously bought this model and continues to really like it so we chose it. It is a little noisier than the previous model but it works great!!

Replacing my Bionaire PureQuiet unit which was sadly discontinued. The Midea does a good job but a little cumbersome removing the top section to empty the large bucket but the large bucket also means less times having to empty it. The noise level was important to me and is actually very acceptable. All in all it's a great unit and well worth the price.

An update. I'm well into my first summer with this unit and it's actually much better than I had expected. I've had many dehumidifiers over the years but none would compare to this one. I'd give it an A+ if I could!
