About this item

  • PULLS THE PERFECT CUP: The pantented wave design reduces contact between the brewing space and the filter itself for a more balanced extraction and a flavorful, full-bodied cup of coffee every time. The design of the dripper and filter together help create a pool of water on top of the coffee bed that can help control agitation, helping maintain a uniform extraction without too much turbulation (which could lead to over extraction).
  • PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS AND PROFESSIONALS: You'll find the Kalita Wave pour over coffee dripper in the world's top specialty cafes and professional coffee-making competitions. But it is also the perfect dripper for pour-over beginners. Cone drippers require perfect grinds and pouring technique in order to prevent stalling and over-extraction. The wave's flat bottom, on the other hand, maintains a wide and even coffee bed, allowing water to permeate and leave the dripper evenly through three holes.
  • MADE SPECIALLY FOR KALITA FILTERS: The design of the dripper and filter together help create a pool of water on top of the coffee bed that can help control agitation, helping maintain a uniform extraction without too much turbulation (which could lead to over extraction).
  • FITS MOST CUPS AND CARAFES: The Kalita Wave's flat-bottomed coffee bed has a dripping area diameter of 2", while the full bottom measures 4" across. These dimensions ensure the Wave coffee dripper fits on almost all cups and carafes without having to worry about coffee dripping over the edges.

Kalita Glass for the 185 - Buy the stainless steel one

Kalita Glass for the 185 - Buy the stainless steel one
Update 3. I fixed the problem today. It pays to be an engineer. Problem, bad extraction due to filter paper adhering to the flat base. A non issue with the stainless steel Kalita but a serious problem with the glass Kalita. Having had a look at the difference in the holes in the two, I rolled a tiny piece of aluminum foil into a ball and then squeezed it flat and made a spacer to,put between the flat bottom and the filter paper. It worked! See photos! Still, I’d recommend you buy the stainless steel Kalita 185.Update 2. Having the opportunity to do a test, everything else equal, between the stainless Kalita and the glass Kalita, four friends and I did a taste test. Every one of us preferred the stainless steel unit and disliked the glass unit coffee. 16:1 ratio. Water corrected for mineral content per SCAA. Pour time equal...everything equal except the Kalita.Update: I’ve had trouble with it, compared to my beloved stainless steel 185. As an update, I can no longer recommend the glass one unless you just want it to complete your collection, for its design appeal and attractiveness. Go with metal instead. This one, well, it’s hard to get a good, timed extraction out of it.Original commentary: I prefer the Kalita style flat bottom pour over design to the conical Hario V60. I've been using a metal one and I like it a lot. I understand that heat is conducted differently with a glass unit. I will update this after playing with the glass one I just received. Be sure to watch the James Hoffmann videos available on the web for all things coffee. Here are some notes that my friend in coffee, Ubi, and I have written up as a guide for using a pour over:"So here again is our method for every new bag of coffee we buy. Even if it is the same coffee that we’ve previously purchased.Today, at my local HEB I found some Cuvée Coffee in the clearance section with a good reduced price of only 5 bucks, so I had to buy and try. When I got home, the first thing I did was call my friend in all things coffee, to bring the bag over to try with the coffee set up. Baratza grinder and various extraction methods. And then, it was to pop a couple of coffee beans in my mouth and chew them to check to see if the coffee was already going into the dead flavor, old stage. Now the bag had said that the expiration date was December 2021. However in tasting the beans I could tell that most of the flavor had already been lost. These were older beans than I am used to, normally buying/purchasing from our local roasters, whose coffee was probably was roasted within the past 3 to 5 days. Now for my set up. With the Baratza grinder, we grind 12 g at 10, 16, and 22 grind settings. We then extract each with 200 mL of water, allow them to cool a bit and then taste them to see which of the grind sizesis resulted in the most flavorful, flavor profile of coffee.A2. Every coffee bag you buy will be different. Here is what you need to do in my opinion. You are going to make three different coffee samples and taste test each one. Try a grind setting on your Baratza of 16, 20, and 26 and a 16:1 coffee to water ratio at each. Use Crystal Geyser water for each extraction. Taste and decide which you like best. Crystal Geyser is available at the Dollar Store. You can test with 12 grams to 200 ml of water in each cup, or, 18 grams to 300 ml of water in each cup.B. Additional comment to someone else that I saved: Does your coffee grinder have several settings? The reason I am asking is that, whenever I get a new bag of coffee, I grind 18 grams each at my Baratza's 12, 18 and 24 settings. I then use 300 ml of water for each. I reuse the paper filter, just rinse it off and reuse it. I then taste test each grind. For consistency, I use Crystal Geyser water that I pick up at the Dollar Tree. In many case a finer grind tastes better. You are trying to find that perfect point between sour and bitter. Yu may find that you want to change the standard SCAA 16:1` ratio. Some coffees, I even go up to a 19.4:1 ratio. Others, I determine that a 10:1 ratio is the best. Each coffee will be different. Even coffee from the same estate, harvested in spring versus fall. It's just the way it is. And then, you have to contend with the roast and how the roaster did the roasting. Pop a couple of coffee beans in your mouth and chew them. That should give you an idea of what coffee flavors are dominant. Spit out the coffee, though, don't swallow it. Additional note: Now, Baratza publishes a recommended grind size when the Virtuoso Plus ships. 8 for espresso, 12 for Aeropress, 15 for Hario, 18 for Autobrewers, 20 for Chemex, 28 for French Press.

I ordered two different pour-overs to replace one that broke and had gone up in price. Both had good independent reviews. THIS POUR-OVER PRODUCES THE BEST FLAVOR of any single cup system I have tried. It is as good as Chemex and better for a single cup.

This has a 3 hole partially flat bottom. The three hole system holds the water just long enough to bring out the flavor. The other I tried was reverse pyramidal. It was less consistent and the wet cone protruded from the hole, sometimes into the coffee.

I use this with standard #4 store drip filters, Melitta or other. Works just fine.

I have been tossing and turning through multiple coffee making systems looking for an all glass alternative that was super tiny and THIS ONE BEATS THEM ALL. I don't know why these pour over cones are so expensive - I like to have a few on hand so ~$25 seems like a lot for what they are but nearly all the good ones are in this price category. Having said that, this pour-over is a deal compared to the machines and the Kalita stands out for its simplicity and design. The glass is very lightweight and almost feels like plastic but is very strong. I've banged it against granite a couple times with no issues. With three holes in the bottom, the pour-through is fast, but the brand's fluted filters are necessary to keep everything flowing well. The 185 makes a single 12-16oz mug with a slow pour - if you want more you may want a bigger cone / carafe. I'm new to pouring-over so it takes a little practice to get just the right cup, but it is a lot of fun. Plus, cleanup is fast and easy.

Can I give it a 3.5? I bought this to replace a Clever Dripper. Wirecutter did a great review of the product and the Kalita website has a couple of great videos about the best way to brew a cup using the Wave but in real life, for me - I am not sure the marginally better tasting cup of coffee is worth the effort.

Before I continue with this review let me say, my review may not be useful to everyone. Coffee seems to be one of the last really personal consumption experiences in the US. As much as it has been commercialized and mass marketed - almost every drinker will take the time to tweak their cup. A little sugar, one or two pumps of flavor, more grounds or less, course grind or fine, water temp at 207F or not... So let me tell you how I like my coffee so you can understand my critique of the Wave.

I drink my coffee black and I do not enjoy bitter coffee. I use a Chemex at home. The Chemex is my gold standard for brewing coffee. I use a manual grinder with a ceramic burr and monitor my water temperature when pouring to ensure it is between 205F and 200F. My beans are all from organic fair trade estates roasted by small roasters I trust. I do not buy starbucks or dunkin beans. I do not use pre-ground coffee.

The Chemex is too much trouble to use at the office so, for about a year, I used a Clever Dripper. I bought a second grinder and kettle for work - this allowed me to brew one cup at a time while achieving a taste close to the Chemex. When Wirecutter reviewed the Wave, I was sold on their recommendation and ordered one for work. I ordered official Wave Filters as well.

The sales pitch for the Wave is that, because of the three holes in its flat bottom, the coffee saturates better, extracting more flavor. The shape of the filter is also supposed to help the water retain heat better.

Simply put, with the Wave, I can brew a cup of coffee that is better than a Clever Dripper and very close to the Chemex. I have not made direct measurements of the water temperature after brewing is complete but it is hotter than a cup brewed from the Clever Dripper.

I have brewed over 50 cups with the Wave, here are my observations:
1) The Clever Dripper holds 16oz of water, the Wave 185 holds approx 8oz. I could pour an entire cup of heated water into the Dripper, with the Wave I have to do a continuous pour.
2) The Wave filters need to be pre-wet or the ribbed pattern will get deformed during the pour, causing grinds to clump in the new folds.
3) The Wave filters do not allow water through in a consistent manner. Let me explain, you place a filter in the Wave. You pre-wet the filter, add your grounds and, after the bloom, begin your pour. One filter will allow all of your water to reach the cup, another filter will stop with 1 or 2 oz of water still in the Wave. Maybe it is something that I am doing but I have experimented and the issue definitely seems to be the filter. One thing I have determined, if the filter retains water during the pre-wetting step, I am not going to get all of the water during the brew. Why is this an issue? because most of the flavor is passed into the cup towards the end of the Wave's brew. The drip slows as the water level in the Wave goes down. As the drip slows, more flavor is extracted from the grounds. If water is left in the Wave at the end, how much flavor are you loosing?
4) The Wave is extremely easy to clean, especially when compared to the Chemex or the Dripper
5) During the pour the grounds cling to the filter ribs. I make sure the pour washes the grounds off the ribs but when the pour is complete there are still grounds on the side. I have taken to gently shaking the Wave to keep the grounds out of the ribs, this works reasonably well.
6) Because of the inconsistent drip rate between filters, a single cup can take anywhere between 6 and 10 minutes
7) The Wave takes a little skill and experimentation to get a good cup of coffee. The Chemex and Dripper required experimentation with regards to grind and water temp but I never worried about the pour. With the Wave, I think the pour is almost as important as the grind and water temp.

I think that covers everything, good brewing...

I bought this after reading rave reviews. They were right. This is a great coffee dripper to have in the kitchen. It even fits on top of my French Press carafe so I can have drip when I want it and my husband can make French press when he wants it. I prefer lattes and this also fits nicely on my big mug. I am very happy with this product. However, it took a little bit of experimentation to get the full flavor I was looking for. Ideally the manufacturer would include some tips, but they don't so this is what worked for me.
First, I get the best flavor if I grind the coffee finer than I would for a Mr. Coffee drip. Second, when the water is hot I start by dribbling several drops onto the grounds. This moistens the grounds AND moistens the filter. You should be able to see the moisture climbing up the sides. Then, after a few minutes I slowly pour the water in at the center. The goal is that you want the grounds to be distributed on the sides of the filter. You're paying for all those folds, use them! As to the amount of coffee it makes, yes the Kalita itself is only so big. I put mine over a pint glass jar. This makes it possible for me to slowly pour in more water until the jar is full - and a pint is two 8 oz servings. If you want your coffee stronger, think about using some more grounds. I'll confess, I often cheat and put in some more water after I have gotten my pint. It's a little weak but works just fine for a later in the day over ice or with milk pick-me up. One thing I really like about this is I get great coffee without a big appliance. I already have an electric hot water pot for when I make tea so this gives me my choice of another beverage while using minimal space.

I own a V60 and Melitta drippers and put off getting a Kalita Wave for a while but decided to buy it now since it was on sale. So far I am really enjoying this pour over! from the week that I have tested it out, it was has made consistent well balanced cups of coffee. Definitely glad I bought this and will probably be rotating between this and the V60 since I think they both make different but good cups.

Pros:
- Makes good consistent cups of coffee
- Looks nice
Cons:
- Kalita wave filters are expensive
- I noticed sometimes coffee doesn't drip from all 3 holes

Excelente pour over. Hasta ahora resistente, fácil de limpiar y cumple con su trabajo, a diferencia de la cerámica, el calor sí se disipa considerablemente más rápido, sin embargo, cumple cabalmente su propósito.

With a bit of experimentation (grinding coarser than I’d have thought plus slightly less hot water than I’d have thought @ 85C) I’m able to consistently brew sweet, rounded coffee with no bitterness or sourness. It’s more forgiving than a V60 and in my view brews a better cup of coffee most of the time. The heat retention on the glass is very good - perhaps because the glass is so thin, it heats up faster and so helps make a good cup of coffee. The price for the system is excellent and when combined with cheap and widely available filters makes for a very affordable way to make coffee.

You might not think the filters point adds up to much: but hear me out. My previous brewer was a Fellow Stagg, and filters for that cannot now be had for anything like a reasonable price (currently £18.99 for 30 filters - ridiculous). It’s a huge point in Kalita’s favour that filters for this Wave 185 system are orders of magnitude more affordable and you can get them in many places. The cost per cup will be that much lower - you can put that money back into good beans.

Other things to note: It’s easy to clean (dishwasher or hand soap), the filters are widely available, and it’s a nice looking thing too. The glass is thinner and probably more delicate than I’d have expected but seems to have held up so far.
