NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Right-hander Luis Garcia, who spent a year with the Angels in 2019, agreed to return on a one-year, $4.25 million deal, pending a physical, a source confirmed on Tuesday night.
Garcia, who will be 37 next month, has spent the past two seasons with the Padres, posting a 3.73 ERA over 125 games and 120⅔ innings. He had a 4.07 ERA in 61 games (59⅔ innings) last season.
Garcia had a 4.35 ERA in 2019 with the Angels, before departing as a free agent. He’s pitched 11 years in the majors, compiling a 4.05 ERA.
One of his biggest strengths is his durability. He has pitched in at least 59 games in five of the last six full seasons. He’s also held right-handed hitters to a .228 average, including .214 last season.
Garcia averaged 97 mph with his fastball last season.
Garcia likely slots in the Angels’ bullpen as a setup man for closer Carlos Estévez, although roles are certain to be shuffled as the Angels continue to add relievers and see how they perform once the season begins.
