IVORY COAST WOMEN PROTEST FRENCH-BROKERED PEACE DEAL

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — About 8,000 women surrounded the French Embassy in a peaceful protest Monday against a French-brokered peace deal that sparked 10 days of often-violent uprisings. Government loyalists object to the plan to bring rebels into the government, accusing French President Jacques Chirac, Ivory Coast’s former colonial ruler, of trying to force the compromises upon them. “Chirac, liar!” the women chanted, dancing and waving tree branches.
