HOUSTON — A British citizen convicted of a 1986 rape and murder was executed Tuesday despite British efforts to gain clemency and an 11th-hour legal battle for DNA tests. In the latest case to pit a foreign government against the formidable Texas criminal-justice system, John “Jackie” Elliott received a lethal injection sometime after 7 p.m. at the Walls prison unit in Huntsville, Texas.
