DRESDEN, Germany — Church bells sounded in Dresden on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the night British and American warplanes firebombed the city and killed 40,000 people near the end of World War II. Accompanied by antiwar demonstrations, Dresdeners placed flowers on graves, watched wreath-laying ceremonies and stood by silently as church bells rang out to mark the Feb. 13, 1945, bombing that ranks as one the most deadly attacks ever.
