ANNIVERSARY COUPLES

Seven couples, who are members of the Tavares Recreation Association, recently were honored during the club’s annual 50 Milers celebration.

The celebration feted members of the club who have been married more than 50 years. The couples were George and Bonnie Wood; Bob and Betty Warrick; Gerald and June Saunders; Harold and Viola Terry; Richard and Wanda Davies; Donald and Corabelle Briggs; and Richard and Margaret Abbott.

The recreation association started more than 40 years ago as a group for senior adults.

The Tavares Recreation Association has potluck meals from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays at the Tavares Civic Center, 100 E. Caroline St.

Weekly programs feature a variety of entertainment, including covered-dish dinners.

The group also plays shuffleboard and card games. New members are welcome.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL RETIRES

Air Force Lt. Col. Lindley N. Johnson recently retired after 23 years of service.

Johnson was decorated with his fifth Meritorious Service Medal at his retirement. The medal is awarded for outstanding noncombat meritorious achievement in service to the United States. He earned the medal during his final assignment as deputy division chief of the Space Control and Advanced Technologies Division at the Pentagon.

Johnson has received many military decorations during his career, including the Joint Services Commendation Medal, Air Force commendation medals, achievement medals and the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star.

He received a bachelor’s degree in astronomy from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Southern California.

His wife, Air Force Col. Brenda S. Johnson, is the daughter of Warren E. and Joan Beaumont of Mount Dora.

ON THE DEAN’S LIST

Emmett Vernon Sapp III, a freshman at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., was recently named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. Sapp is a 2002 graduate of Leesburg High School.
