MOUNT DORA — For the past nine months, Terry Sibilrud has been building the type of neighborhood pub that he would like to frequent.

The result, called Al E. Gators of Mount Dora, opened its doors at the end of last month and invites residents and travelers alike to stay for a drink and snack or sandwich.

The setting has an eclectic atmosphere indoors and a secluded beer garden outdoors in the heart of downtown Mount Dora.

“People say we created a ‘Cheers’ atmosphere here,” Sibilrud said. “We gutted the whole place and completely redecorated with antiques to give it an intimate and comfortable feeling.”

The pub fills the space on Dora Drawdy Lane across from the Mount Dora Railroad behind Sunshine Mountain Bakery, where Gourmet to Go and Grey Cafe used to whip up gourmet fare.

Sibilrud’s wife, Jean, runs an antique and collectibles shop, the Vintage Gazebo, in the front of the building, while Al E. Gators is in the back.

“She told me I needed to get a job, so when this place opened up, we moved in,” Sibilrud said.

Residents haven’t had a difficult time finding the new local hangout that seats about 50, Sibilrud said. “We’ve been really busy and had a great start with the art festival earlier this month,” Sibilrud said. “We have a lot of good help and everything is running really smoothly.”

Now that the sounds of hammers and saws are gone, Sibilrud and his small staff are serving cold beer, wine and sodas and hot sandwiches such as Reubens, barbecued beef brisket and Vienna hot dogs. Cold sandwiches, chips and a desserts are also available.

A newcomer to the restaurant business, Sibilrud was the owner of The Upper Room, a bed-and-breakfast inn, which was across the street in front of the Vintage Gazebo at Donnelly and Third Avenue.

He and his wife have lived in Lake County for eight years since moving from the Midwest and South Florida.

“It is a sports bar-type atmosphere where everyone is welcome,” Sibilrud said. “We want to keep it good and simple.”

Al E. Gators is open every day, Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. until midnight.
