Question: Is there anything that can be done for a pool deck that is showing cracks? The pool deck is 2 years old and has an acrylic finish. Is there a special paintable caulk, sealant or epoxy that can be used to fill in these cracks?

Answer: Deck or concrete cracking is almost a certainty in Florida because of the sandy soil and extremes in temperature, plus wet/dry conditions. Hairline deck cracks are something you will have to live with. However, larger cracks can over time create a void under the deck, which may cause the concrete to settle in different levels.

There are numerous caulks that are designed to help correct your problem. Make sure the one you select is waterproof, flexible (look for the word elastomeric) and intended for masonry and concrete. The important part in your repair is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Remember, the caulk won’t eliminate the deck crack from your view, but with matching acrylic paint, it won’t be as noticeable. This minor but important repair will block the water from seeping in, preventing further damage.
