Performing Arts of Lake and Sumter [P.A.L.S.] counties, a nonprofit organization designed to raise funds to build a performing-arts center on Lake-Sumter Community College’s Leesburg campus, needs volunteers to help in its office at the college’s Leesburg campus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. LifeStream Behavioral Center, a nonprofit organization in Leesburg, needs volunteer telephone crisis counselors to work in the Access Center in the emergency-services department at LifeStream’s hospital, 2020 Talley Road, Leesburg. Counselors will field calls from individuals who may be suicidal or homicidal or in need of referrals to internal or external systems for mental-health and substance-abuse services. Activities Department at Lake Harris Health Center in Lake Port Square in Leesburg — a life-care retirement community offering independent-living apartments, assisted-living apartments, home health services and skilled nursing care — needs volunteers to assist the staff in conducting recreational programs for its residents. Habitat for Humanity of Lake County needs volunteers to help build new houses for needy families. Skilled and unskilled construction workers are needed. Children’s Home Society of Florida needs volunteers for its Mentors Opening Doors Enriching Lives (M.O.D.E.L) program. Mentors provide support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a positive example for children ages 4 through 15. Camp Boggy Creek, a camp in Cassia, east of Eustis, for children with chronic or other serious illnesses — needs men and women volunteers 19 and older to interact with campers ages 7 to 16 for three- to four-day family weekends beginning September and continuing through April. Anthony House in Zellwood, a shelter for the homeless, needs volunteers to help with day-to-day operations: child-care aides, recreational aides, mentors, tutors, educational speakers, hobbyists, computer repairs, barbers, beauticians, electricians, mechanics, drivers and attorneys. Anthony House, a nonprofit organization, provides emergency shelter for families displaced because of loss of employment or other circumstances. The shelter provides sleeping space for families and individuals.

The Anthony House Thrift Shop at 3203 N. Orange Blossom Trail, Zellwood, also needs volunteers who are experienced in retail sales for several days a week. The thrift shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Camp Challenge, an Easter Seals camp on State Road 46 near Sorrento that offers recreation and rehabilitation for the disabled, needs volunteers to assist campers during its respite and summer-camp programs. Clermont Neighborhood Center distributes food and clothing, as well as financial assistance, to about 300 families per month. Community Care Health Services Inc. on U.S. Highway 27, Clermont, a nonprofit adult day-care center, needs volunteers to help physically challenged people from youths to seniors with daily living activities. Angel Flight Southeast Inc., a five-state organization of hundreds of private pilots and ground volunteers who provide free air transportation to those with compelling medical or compassionate needs, needs volunteers for data entry, flight coordination, graphic design, public relations, administration and fundraising. Haven Sexual Assault Services needs on-call volunteers to respond to calls from victims who have been sexually assaulted or abused. Junior Achievement needs volunteers to administer its economics programs throughout Lake County schools in grades kindergarten through 12. Volunteers will facilitate 35- to 45-minute sessions once a week. The program runs from five to eight weeks. Training will be provided. Details: 352-385-4440.
