Blood drive

The bloodmobile will be in the following locations:

Dickinson Park, at U.S. Highway 17-92 and East Graves Avenue in Orange City, from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 4.

Deltona City Hall, 2345 Providence Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 9.

Photo identification is required for all blood donors. All donors will receive:

Art competition

“Get Active at Your Library” is the theme for the 2006 Active Ingredients Teen Art Competition at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway.

Area middle and high school students can submit original works of art inspired by books that encourage them to lead active lifestyles with exercise, sports, volunteering, diet, outdoor hobbies or career goal setting.

Cash prizes of $50 for first place, $35 for second place and $25 for third place will be awarded.

The deadline for submissions is 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12.

Award-winning artists Jean Banas and Bruce Hammond will judge the entries. Winners will be notified by telephone. All entries will be displayed in the library.

Camp BeginAgain

Camp BeginAgain, a weekend retreat for children 6 to 18 years old who have experienced the death of a loved one, is taking applications for the next session, Nov. 10-12, at the Central Baptist Youth Camp in DeLand.

Welcome Wagon

New Beginnings

Hospice of Volusia-Flagler will offer New Beginnings adult grief support groups in October for those coping with the death of a loved one. The groups are facilitated by professional counselors, and topics include adjusting a new way of life, identifying feelings and symptoms of grief and learning to manage loss and stress.

On WCEU-Channel 15

Volusia Magazine, the county’s weekly public-information television program on WCEU-Channel 15, focuses on the background of the seven charter-change proposals.

Stetson University political science professor T. Wayne Bailey provides background on the Volusia charter and the rationale for the proposed changes.

The 30-minute show airs at 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and repeats at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2.

Gator Club

Recipe contest, pecan sale

The DeBary Garden Club is sponsoring a hometown-choice pecan recipe contest along with the annual pecan sale.

Contest applications may be picked up at Riverside Bank, U.S. Highway 17-92 in DeBary, at City Hall or from a club member. Recipes must be returned to the bank with a $5 application fee per recipe before Oct. 15. Judging will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 4 at the bank.

Pecan halves or chocolate-covered pieces are for sale for $8 a bag or $15 for two bags. Each bag will be accompanied by the contest’s winning recipe. Orders must be placed by Oct. 15.

Deputy sponsorship

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the deputy sponsorship program that provides full scholarships to low-income people who want to become deputy sheriffs. Qualification is based on personal or family income. Selected applicants will attend the Basic Law Enforcement Officer Academy at Daytona Beach Community College.

Applicants will also be hired by the Sheriff’s Office and paid $8.50 per hour for 40 hours per week while enrolled in the academy.

Hike Wiregrass Prairie

Volusia County Land Acquisition and Management will sponsor a free guided hike of Wiregrass Prairie Preserve from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 7.

Participants will learn about wildflowers of the pine flatwoods, wet prairie and other wetland areas of the preserve.

Wear comfortable hiking or walking shoes that can get wet and bring bottled drinking water, insect repellent and cameras.

Youth

Soccer Challenge

The DeBary Knights of Columbus and the city of DeBary are sponsoring a Youth Soccer Challenge Competition at 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at Rob Sullivan Field, 200 W. Highbanks Road, DeBary.

Boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2006 Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge.

Competitors will each get 15 penalty kicks. The goals will be divided into five sections with a different point value assigned to each.

The top three scorers from each of the 10 divisions will advance to the regional competition.

Participation is free; registration will be taken the day of the event.
