Central Florida — Two more candidates have withdrawn from consideration to become the first dean of the University of Central Florida’s planned medical school, but university officials will press ahead with new interviews of the remaining two.

Bruce Meyer of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Mark Pfeifer of the University of Louisville School of Medicine are the latest to bow out of the search, the university announced Tuesday.

Bruce Jarrell of the University of Maryland School of Medicine withdrew previously.

That leaves Deborah German of the Association of American Medical Colleges in Washington, and Thomas Schwenk of the University of Michigan Medical School.

All five were interviewed by a search committee two weeks ago. German is scheduled to return to Orlando next week to meet with members of the university’s board of trustees, several administrators and the deans of UCF’s other colleges.

She also is scheduled to participate in an open forum at the Student Union. Because of schedule conflicts, Schwenk will come at a later date, UCF spokesman Tom Evelyn said.

The dean will be expected to develop the school’s curriculum, hire faculty and work toward preliminary accreditation for the medical school, which will be built at the Lake Nona development near Orlando International Airport.

College officials and community leaders also expect the dean to promote economic development by attracting medical-related businesses and institutions.
