The council’s mission statement is to empower students to achieve, excel and celebrate lifelong learning.

Its first project is Red Ribbon Week, an annual event that educates children about the dangers of drugs, which kicked off Saturday and runs through Sunday.

Democracy scholarship

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8087 of Mount Dora and its auxiliary will sponsor the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. High-school students may participate in the annual audio-essay competition to win scholarships, trips and awards.

The competition offers students a chance to increase their self-confidence and poise, to polish communication skills and to express themselves.

Students need to write and then record a three- to five-minute audio essay while expressing their view of the program theme, “Freedom’s Challenge.”

There are local and district prizes. State winners will receive at least a $1,000 national scholarship and become eligible to win a $30,000 first-place award.
