‘E.T.’ to be shown at family movie night in Leu Gardens

Harry P. Leu Gardens and Women in Film and Television Florida will have a movie night for families Saturday in recognition of National Family Week.

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial will be shown, and anyone 17 or younger will be admitted free. Tickets are $5 plus tax for adults and can be bought at the gate. Admission is free for gardens members. The gardens will open at 6 p.m., and movie time is 7:30, weather permitting. Bring a dinner picnic basket and blanket or chairs. Concessions will be available.

Preserving area’s water systems to be discussed

The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs District VII and the city of Winter Park will sponsor a conference on the preservation of water systems in Central Florida.

“Don’t Be A Drip, Water Matters” is the theme of the conference, which will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Winter Park Civic Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd.

Tom MacCubbin, Think Two spokesman for the St. Johns River Water Management District, will moderate the conference. Speakers include Kirby B. Green III, executive director of the St. Johns River Water Management District, board member Ann Taylor Moore and Frank Kujawa from the University of Central Florida. Nathaniel Reed, chairman of the Commission on the Future of Florida’s Environment, will give the keynote speech.

Teresa Watkins of Florida’s Yards and Neighborhoods will lead a panel discussion after the presentations to round out the day.

Ocoee to take applications for grants to nonprofits

Ocoee will begin accepting applications for its Community Merit Awards Program on Wednesday.

The Community Merit Awards are grants made to nonprofit organizations whose members include Ocoee residents and business people.

The grants acknowledge excellence and further the benefits the organizations bring to the Ocoee community. The maximum grant award is $500.

Applications are reviewed and ranked by the Merit Awards Review Board, a group of Ocoee residents appointed by the City Commission.

After the board makes its recommendations, the City Commission makes the final decision.

Applications are available at www.ci.ocoee.fl.us or at the City Hall reception desk. Completed applications should be mailed or delivered to City Hall, attention Community Relations Department. The deadline to submit applications is Nov. 30.
