Along with 11 members of the Lake Republican Women’s Club, I attended the memorial for the late Sheriff Chris Daniels at the Bay Street Baptist Church in Eustis. It helped each of us to go together as a group to pay our respects.

Daniels was an associate member of our club and attended often. He was comfortable among us because he was one of us. He had a boyish smile and enthusiasm that drew others to him.

His clean-cut appearance and the white starched shirt with the shiny gold badge, which he wore proudly, always stood out. But he was never a proud man. His smile, humility and gratitude to those who elected him are what we will remember fondly.

While leading in this important position as chief law-enforcement officer, he never forgot the meaning of the word “serve.” This characteristic makes a good man a great man.
