UPDATED:

Two men were arrested Friday after reports of them carrying illegal modified weapons led to a deputy shooting at one in Pine Hills during a traffic stop, Orange County Sheriff John Mina told reporters.

The shooting took place near Pine Hills Road and Balboa Drive after deputies received information late that morning that the men, whose names have not been released, possessed handguns modified to be fully automatic, according to the sheriff. After a rideshare vehicle they were traveling in was stopped, both suspects exited the car, one with a handgun.

Mina said the deputy fired a single shot at the armed man, who fled out the rear passenger window and was captured after a brief chase. The second suspect fled the scene but was later captured. No injuries were reported.

“I’m glad that our deputies are out there,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that we have a small percentage of people who aren’t going to follow the law, but we’re doing our job and arresting the bad guy.”

Body camera video recorded the incident, with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office expected to publicly release it within a month.

“I did watch the body cam footage. It happens very, very quickly,” Mina said.

The deputy who fired his gun was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The deputy, whose name has not been released, has been with the agency “for about nine years,” he said.

No other details were released.
