In Supreme Court, rule of law still prevails

A July 3 letter to the editor (“Supreme Court hits a new low”) claimed the Supreme Court has “left this country open to all forms of authoritarian abuse by Trump if elected president.” Before repeating the same unfounded warnings promulgated by the liberal press and several high-ranking Democratic officials, let some statistics from The Wall Street Journal lend some perspective.

In 2023, almost 46% of all Supreme Court cases were unanimous. Yet another factual example is that out of 22 cases decided 6-3, only half produced outright ideological splits. The writer claims the court “spit on the Founding Fathers,” but in reality, it is this Supreme Court taking a textualist and original view of legal questions as intended by those founders. The rule of law prevails.

DeSantis hypocrisy extends to environment

Gov. Ron DeSantis has reached a new low in his hypocrisy. He has routinely signed bills that limit the powers of local governments to deal with worker safety (heat and water breaks) and police oversight. Now he has vetoed bipartisan legislation — the Safe Waterways Act — that would warn potential swimmers and boaters of bacterial contamination or other hazards in the ocean and waterways. DeSantis’ reasoning? This would have taken away responsibility from local governments and given it to the state. So contradictory, it makes my head spin.

Biden must be honest about health

President Joe Biden needs to be forthright with the American people. He must share the honest truth about health issues that are sparking intense debate. If he reveals unknown information and steps aside, he will garner widespread support and sympathy from the public. This will not only boost his popularity but also invigorate the entire Democratic Party. This is the true way to turn lemons into lemonade.

The nation urgently needs change. Republicans who oppose Donald Trump and non-affiliated voters need an alternative. President Biden is unlikely to secure their votes. Only staunch Democrats will vote for a good man who may be struggling with health issues. Young voters, who were already disenchanted, may have had their reluctance to vote solidified by the debate disaster. As things stand now, I believe Trump will win in a landslide.

Biden must acknowledge any limitations publicly. I believe his withdrawal from the race is the only path to potentially saving the free world. He can turn his debate performance into an asset by using it to demonstrate his integrity. President Biden, it’s time to make that lemonade.

Harris running would be a boon for Trump

After Joe Biden’s meltdown in the first presidential debate, Democrats are scrambling to stay in power. Many are saying that Biden should step down and the likely successor would be Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is famous for her failure to adequately address our Southern border, the biggest job she has publicly been asked to do. I believe installing her as the nominee is a sure-fire recipe for a Trump romp in November.

Should she run and likely lose, it would be a de facto “BOGO” win for Trump, as he would have beaten Biden, by default, and Harris outright. In addition, many down-ticket Democrats would suffer the same fate.
