The National Weather Service has placed all of Central Florida under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday with peak heat index values forecast to approach from 106-112 degrees.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the advisory warns. “Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”
Regular highs are expected to be in the mid- to upper-90s among the interior counties with low 90s closer to the coast. Humidity, though, will push the “feels-like” temperatures up to dangerous highs.
Both Orlando at 97 degrees and Vero Beach at 96 degrees tied records temperatures on Sunday.
Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms possible late in the day.
“The main hazard with slow moving showers and storms will be locally heavy rainfall,” according to the NWS forecast noting 1-3 inches of rain are possible in some areas with more than 4 inches possible.
“A marginal risk for excessive rainfall exists over portions of Lake, Volusia, Orange Seminole, and northern Brevard county today for this reason.”
The storms could produce gusts from 40-50 mph with frequent lightning strikes.
Rain chances diminish after sunset and end by midnight.
Similar heat and rain patterns are expected on Tuesday, although the heat index will drop slightly with low 90s forecast with feels-like temperatures due to humidity ranging from 100-107 degrees.
