Video Of Massive Sinkhole Swallowing Bleachers And An Entire Light Pole At Soccer Field Will Blow Your Mind

One of the strangest and downright scariest things on Earth is sinkholes. One moment, something is there, and in an instant, the Earth can simply give out and swallow something whole like a sandworm in ‘Dune.’ The scene that unfolded with a sinkhole at some soccer fields at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois is nightmare fuel.

Surveillance video shared by the City of Alton shows the moment a 100-foot-wide sinkhole opens and swallows a small set of bleachers and an entire light pole. Everything just disappears before a cloud of dust emerges from the hole.

According to a statement from New Frontier Material obtained by the Alton Telegraph, the sinkhole was a result of "a surface subsidence" that occurred at its underground mine in Alton. In other words, these soccer fields were built far too close to an active mine location.

A drone shot of the aftermath really puts into scale just how massive the sinkhole is. The turf of the field hanging over the edge of the 100-foot opening is a wild sight.

"The impacted area has been secured and will remain off limits for the foreseeable future while inspectors and experts examine the mine and conduct repairs," the statement said, in part.

Yeah, that's probably a wise call.

This could have been a real-life scene straight out of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with people being sucked into the Earth, but thankfully nobody was at the field when the incident occurred.

"It’s unfortunate, but the blessing is that no one was injured. There was no one on the ground at the time the collapse happened," Alton Mayor David Goins said. "We’re very, very fortunate because as bad as this is, it could've been worse because there could've been injury or loss of life."

Let's stop building sports complexes near mine sites, or vice versa, let's maybe stop mining near parks that are filled sports fields.
