Trailing 25-14 entering the final quarter, the Panthers took the lead when running back Fozzy Whittaker and quarterback Cam Newton capped the first two drives of the quarter with short touchdown runs. Will Lutz tied the game at 28 with his fourth field goal before Newton directed the game-winning drive, finishing it off with a 6-yard touchdown pass to fullback Mike Tolbert.

Before Newton took over in the fourth quarter, running back Jonathan Stewart tried to keep Carolina afloat. He opened both halves with a rushing touchdown on his way to a 121-yard day, but in between the Saints scored 22 points and took a 22-7 lead to halftime. After that, though, a defense paced by linebacker Thomas Davis' 12 tackles held Drew Brees and Co. in check.

Player of the Game: Newton was spectacular, completing 22-of-27 passes for 287 yards while rushing for 34 more. He also looked spectacular in Carolina's color rush uniforms.

"When I play Madden, that's what I'm wearing," Newton said.
