Galaxy S24 release date

  • Official announcement date: January 17, 2024
  • Official Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus release date: January 31, 2024

Now that the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus have been officially introduced, they'll be in a pre-order state until January 30. The long-awaited S24 release date is scheduled for January 31, when the S24, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra will all hit the shelves.

This year's Galaxy release surely comes along earlier than previous ones: while the Galaxy S24 lineup will go official in January, most previous Galaxy phones were announced in February, with the notable exception of the Galaxy S21 series.

Galaxy S24 price

Thank God, Samsung withheld from increasing prices this year, so its latest and greatest inventions cost the same as the S23 and S23 Plus last year. This means the Galaxy S24 starts at $799 (128GB), while the Galaxy S24 Plus remains a $999 (256GB) phone.

The higher storage variants go as follows: S24 256GB costs $859, while a 512GB S24 Plus costs $1119.

Reviews

The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus are already here, and we've reviewed both of these hot devices and compared them with their closest rivals.

Galaxy S24 camera

  • Galaxy S24: 50 + 12 + 10MP
  • Galaxy S24 Plus: 50 + 12 + 10MP

Both the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus keep the same camera setups as the Galaxy S23 series, with no major hardware shakeups. Thus, we once again welcome the trusted 50 MP main camera, accompanied by 12MP ultra-wide, as well as a 10MP telephoto that offers a 3.0x optical zoom.

However, just because Samsung isn't changing things hardware-wise, doesn't mean that the photos you'll be able to get out of the S24 and S24 Plus will be the same. For starters, you have new chipsets with new image signal processors on board (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in the US and Exynos 2400 in Europe). And, in addition to that, Samsung is coming in hard with several AI-powered features designed to increase the quality and functionality of the camera experience.

AI will certainly have a hand in the processing of the photos these phones are going to take, but most notably, it'll enable Super HDR preview, allowing you to see how the photo is going to actually look before you've taken it. That was a long time coming, but we're glad it's finally here. The AI-enhanced ISP is also promised to be adept at churning out high-quality night photos, even if you're using the zoom camera! And speaking of the zoom camera, AI will help out with making sure super-zoomed images come out with reasonably clear details as well.

While the above AI features were meant to improve photo quality, there are some intended to make the experience more flexible. Similarly to Google's Pixel 8 series, the S24 and S24 Plus will now allow you to use generative fill and object edit for more creative edits. For example, if you've ever tried to rotate a photo, so the angle of the composition looks more straight, artistic, or simply appealing to you, you know how that typically means you end up with space around the sides, meaning you need to crop into the photos. Well, generative fill should work great in those situations, managing to make up for whatever lost details during the rotating process.

What's more, similar to what Apple has done with the iPhone 15, the Galaxy S24 series is said to default to 24MP photos instead of 12MP ones, which would inherently make each shot much clearer as there would be double the amount of information in them. This would also allow you to crop in on an image more aggressively before its quality visibly starts to deteriorate.

At the front, we have the same 12MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture and 80-degree FoV that made the rounds on the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus.

Galaxy S24 storage

Samsung is keeping the same storage models as last year, meaning you can get the S24 with 128 GB or 256 GB of storage, while the S24 Plus is available with 256 GB and 512 GB of storage. But while the small S24 comes equipped with the same 8 GB RAM, the S24 Plus steps things up with 12 GB RAM, making it that much more future-proof.

Sadly, the Galaxy S24 isn't available with 512GB of storage; this is reserved for the slightly upscale Galaxy S24 Plus.

Galaxy S24 storage capacity:
  • 128GB
  • 256 GB

Galaxy S24 Plus storage capacity:
  • 256 GB
  • 512 GB

As mentioned earlier, until Jan 30, you can get a free upgrade to the 256 GB S24 or the 512 GB S24 Plus.

Galaxy S24 design

The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus don't score a vastly different design, but some slight alterations here and there are shaking the visual and ergonomic side of things. In addition to the new colors and satin back finishes, the sides of the phones are a bit flatter now, freshening things up a little.

From a size perspective, Samsung has seemingly hit the sweet spot with a super-compact 6.1-inch Galaxy flagship and a 6.65-inch device with a larger footprint. We really don't see any reason for Samsung to stray away from this established pattern. Of course, both devices remain water- and dust-resistant, with stereo speakers, and all the other bells and whistles we've come to expect out of a high-end Samsung phone.

In terms of colors, the Galaxy S24 Plus and the Galaxy S24 are available in the following selection of colors:

  • Marble Gray
  • Cobalt Violet
  • Onyx Black
  • Amber Yellow

Exclusively on the Samsung.com store, potential customers are able to purchase the following colors:

  • Sandstone Orange
  • Sapphire Blue
  • Jade Green

Galaxy S24 display

  • Galaxy S24 Plus: 6.7-inch LTPO 1-120Hz QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X
  • Galaxy S24: 6.2-inch LTPO 1-120Hz FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X

The Galaxy S24 Plus features a 6.7-inch display, whereas the Galaxy S24 comes with a 6.2-inch one, meaning both new phones come with ever so slightly larger displays compared to their predecessors. Both displays are promised to be super-bright Dynamic AMOLED ones, with all the bells and whistles that make OLED screens so head-turning: perfect contrast, exceptional vibrancy, and very high brightness.

Perhaps even more notable is the fact that the S24 Plus is arriving with a higher resolution of QHD+ this time, up from the FHD+ of its predecessor.

The Galaxy S24 screens bring the M13 LTPO display panel across the Galaxy S24 lineup. In comparison with the M12 display that is found on the Galaxy S23 series Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip 5, the M13 screen is thinner and more efficient, both of which are excellent improvements.

Samsung is also cranking up the maximum brightness of these displays, all the way up to 2600 nits, making these one of the brightest displays out there.

Galaxy S24 battery and charging specs

  • Galaxy S24: 4,000mAh
  • Galaxy S24 Plus: 4,900mAh

The Galaxy S23/Galaxy S23 Plus both scored larger (or denser) batteries than their predecessors: 3,700mAh on Galaxy S22 to 3,900mAh on Galaxy S23, while the 4,500mAh on Galaxy S22 Plus rose to 4,700mAh on the Galaxy S23 Plus

Now, the Galaxy S24 is ready to make all Samsung fans happy, as it's graced with a larger unit of 4,000mAh. Not to be outdone, the S24 Plus is also pushing the envelope this year with a massive 4,900mAh battery.

Galaxy S24 software and features

The Galaxy S24 will arrive with the One UI 6.1 interface, based on Android 14.

The most notable improvements in this version of One UI concern the addition of AI-powered functionality.

Among the host of AI features are Live Translate, which automatically translates the voice of a foreign language caller (pretty neat), chat assistance (translation, proofreading, rephrasing), as well as Google's Circle to Search feature, which allows you to circle an item seen on screen to initiate a Google search about the item, which seems genuinely convenient.

In response to the Pixel 8's 7 years of software and security updates, Samsung is also bumping those numbers up to 7 years, both for major software releases and security updates.

Galaxy S24 hardware and specs

The Galaxy S23 series broke years of tradition and shipped with a single Qualcomm chipset globally (an exclusively tuned-up version), whereas Samsung used both Exynos and Qualcomm chips previously.

Well, that changes again with the Galaxy S24 series, as Samsung has chosen to equip the S24 and S24 Plus with Exynos 2400 chip in most international markets except for the USA and China, which get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Interestingly, the S23 Ultra will come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in all markets!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is coming with a slightly different configuration in comparison with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and boasts one prime core, five high-performance, and two efficiency cores. This will hopefully improve performance as it will swap an efficiency core for a high-performance one.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy is also supposed to be a graphics-crunching powerhouse, thanks to the powerful new Adreno 750 GPU that's said to be up to 50% faster than the Adreno 740 unit found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy.
