Joe Biden’s surrogates were swarmed by reporters in the spin room after the debate ended. The ring of reporters was so deep around Biden’s Democratic support, including Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), that it was difficult to hear them in the back of the scrum. Someone shouted to Newsom, “Governor, are you ready to replace Joe Biden if you’re asked?” Newsom said that he was “very proud of the president.” “So from my humble perspective, this is not about style. This is about delivering results for the American people,” Newsom said. But as he spoke, some reporters yelled questions about whether he regretted not running for president or if he would jump in. When asked if he would challenge former President Donald Trump, Newsom laughed as he climbed the stairs to a TV hit. “That’s a non sequitur.”
