Following George Hill’s trade value requires lineage of biblical proportions

Six years ago today a domino effect of trades set in motion that is still actively impacting the Spurs future

George Hill was drafted on June 26, 2008 in the 26th spot by the Spurs. He spent his first three NBA seasons in San Antonio.

Pop professed Hill was one of his favorite players of all time.

And then Pop and the front office traded him to the Indiana Pacers.

For whom? Well, we all know.

Kawhi Leonard.

2011

Techincally, Hill was traded for Leonard (the 15th pick), Dāvis Bertāns (the 42nd pick), and 2005 draftee Erazem Lorbek. Lorbek joined the Spurs’ 2016 NBA Summer League roster, but never played in the NBA during his career.

Leonard played with the Spurs from 2011-2018. During his time, the Spurs won their 5th NBA title, of which Leonard was the Finals MVP. He also earned back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honors and attended his first two NBA All-Star Games.

2018

July 18 (six years to today), Leonard and Danny Green were traded to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and the protected 2019 first-round draft pick that became Keldon Johnson.

2019

Meanwhile Davis Bertans was traded to the Washington Wizards on July 6, 2019 in a three-team deal that also included the Brooklyn Nets. The Spurs received DeMarre Carroll via sign-and-trade. Carroll was waived mid-season after appearing on only 15 games.

2021

On August 11, 2021, DeRozan was traded to the Chicago Bulls in a sign-and-trade deal; the Bulls sent

  • Thaddeus Young- on February 10, 2022, Young, Drew Eubanks, and the 2022 second round selection that became Christian Koloko were traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Goran Dragić and the 2022 first-round draft selection that became Malaki Branham. Dragic agreed to a contract buyout.
  • Al-Farouq Aminu, who was waived after one pre-season game.
  • a protected first-round draft pick (protected 1–10 in 2025, protected 1-8 in 2026 or 2027)
  • a 2022 second round pick (Kennedy Chandler, traded the day after the draft to the Memphis Grizzlies for the this year’s 48th pick, who became Harrison Ingram).
  • and a 2025 second round pick.

2023

February 9, 2023, Jakob Pöltl was traded back to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for

  • Khem Birch, who was waived,
  • the 44th 2023 second-round pick that became Sidy Cissoko,
  • the 8th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft that became Rob Dillingham,
  • and a 2025 second-round pick.

2024

  • The 8th pick of the NBA Draft, Rob Dillignham, was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Minnesota’s 2031 first-round pick and the right to swap 2030 first-round picks with the Timberwolves

So what remains from drafting George Hill (and trading Danny Green’s final contract season in 2018 and Drew Eubank’s in 2022)?

  1. Keldon Johnson
  2. Malaki Branham
  3. Sidy Cissoko
  4. Harrison Ingram
  5. A protected 1st round pick from Chicago starting in 2025
  6. Two 2nd round picks in 2025
  7. A right to swap first-round picks with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2030
  8. Minnesota’s 2031 first-round pick

Four current Spurs players, three picks next summer, and a swap and pick in the next decade.

That’s pretty good return on a once great Spurs point guard.
