I've done the work: in my travels, throughout my studies, all the relationships and moments of my life — and this enables me to hold space for others to understand what meaning their pain holds.
Accepting New Clients / Available for supervision (not practicum students). People today are making their mental health a priority. When someone reaches out for counselling, it's usually because of a problem they want to work through, something they hope to change, or an area of their life they desire to grow and develop. Counselling is very much a collaborative process. I see my role as creating a therapeutic environment that feels comfortable & safe so clients can explore their lives more fully and come to a greater understanding of who they are. NEW: Direct Billing option thru "Telus e-Health" possible with some providers.

To explore your desire for therapy and answer any questions you may have, I offer a free (up to 20 minute) phone or video consult.
One of my clients described the process of therapy "like finally turning the lights on in a room that had been dark." It takes courage to seek counselling. It means committing to letting ourselves see, feel, and start to heal what we are no longer willing to keep dark. The joy in my work comes from helping people 'turn the lights on,' and witnessing what happens when they do.

I work with young people (ages 12+), adults and families.
Many of us have experienced the impacts of negative stories or beliefs about ourselves. These stories can serve to separate us from our preferred ways of living and being in the world. Have you had these types of experiences? Has this resulted in anxiety, depression, anger, low self-worth and/or despair or challenges with substance use? My work is focused on supporting you to renegotiate your relationship to these unhelpful stories. I am skilled at supporting people to (re)connect with their values, and hopes and to develop a new and preferred picture of themselves.

I am strongly committed to helping others through therapy, and I approach my work from a non- judgmental and compassionate stance.
I believe therapy is a collaborative and supportive space between you and I, in which we can work together to identify and achieve your goals. The therapy room is a space for you to feel safe and comfortable. By creating that, we can then work together to peel back the layers of who you are, explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and work on making positive changes in your life. I take a holistic approach to therapy, as this allows me to consider many factors that can impact your mental health and well-being. By considering your past experiences, childhood, environment, intersectionality and identity.

We all have parts of ourselves that we wish were different; parts of ourselves we are ashamed of, or perhaps sad, or angry, or irritated with.
Do you feel anxious or depressed or hopeless? Have you experienced a loss? Are you struggling with a lack of direction or purpose? Or, perhaps you are experiencing difficulty with others. I work with adults experiencing grief, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I have a decade of healthcare experience working with a diverse population of individuals and families experiencing traumatic grief, and loss.

I believe one of the goals in counselling is to facilitate a collaborative relationship and co-create new meaning, understanding and action.
Are you a lawyer who excels at solving other people's problems but don't know how to begin to solve your own? I know how overwhelming it can be to juggle a legal practice and life. I am a lawyer turned counsellor. I am a mother of two and married to a litigator. I have helped many lawyers and other members of the legal community, and their families, work through mental health challenges. I can help you too.

We all need support sometimes, but it takes courage to reach out.
Are you facing difficulties or challenges that you either don't understand or that you feel powerless to do something about? Are there specific internal issues that you can identify that you want to resolve, like anxiety, or depression, or problems in relationship - whether that's with others, or with yourself? Do you find that you are self-critical, self-doubting, unable to respond to the events of your life with freedom, and instead trapped in patterns you cannot seem to overcome on your own? Do you want to be free of such self-defeating patterns, and be the person you were put here on this earth to be? Let's make it happen.

Depression Counsellors

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
