In our sessions I may pull from a variety of evidence-based approaches including mindfulness, positive psychology, cognitive approaches, and energy/somatic techniques to help you reach your goals.
Life can be challenging and some parts can keep us feeling stuck. Maybe you're dealing with an issue that keeps coming up, anxiety that prevents you from living the way you want, or something from your past. Maybe you're overwhelmed or unhappy and need some support. As a counselling therapist I provide a safe, non-judgemental presence to explore whatever it is that needs your attention. Together we can bring compassion and curiosity to your struggles and find new perspectives so that you can shift out of patterns that no longer serve you. I'm here for you.

While I am trained in numerous techniques and use a variety of methods (including Intensive Short-Term Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, EMDR, Emotional Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology & Mindfulness), I respect the uniqueness of every individual and will always implement a tailored approach that caters to specific individual needs.
In my years of practice, my focus has been centred around individuals from different walks of life (i.e race, religion, gender, sexual orientation etc). Particularly, ones who have trauma, body image issues, low self esteem, fibromyalgia, phobias and/or are anxious, depressed, stressed, destructive, angry, lonely, abused and in or have been in the child welfare system. In regards to my approach, I am genuine and compassionate, but remain equally honest and direct. Rather than bombarding clients with endless questions, I aim to engage them through meaningful methods and effective interventions.

I am passionate about helping my clients develop a heathier self-relationship. Throughout our lives we can accumulate shame and fear, and dismiss emotions and experiences that are challenging to look at. This dismissal of the self can cause inner turmoil, emotional dysregulation, and may keep us feeling stuck in old patterns. I create a safe space for my clients to sit with and process their emotional experiences so that they may live more wholeheartedly, show up for themselves, and show up more fully in their relationships.

Is the inside of your head feeling like an uncomfortable place to be? Working with a mental health professional can create a meaningful shift. Sometimes the harsh things we say to ourselves and our unconscious patterns can leave us trapped in a cycle of just trying to survive. Could the way you've learned to cope/survive be keeping you stuck or moving you away from who you want to be and how you want to live? Learning to see yourself, your life, and your patterns clearly can create opportunities for healing, growth, and more meaningful relationships.

My focus is on helping clients face difficult life challenges and the emotions, worries and fears that come with them. Stress, anxiety, and depression are more familiar to us than we would like. Our goal in therapy is to improve your coping skills and overall well-being. With that, I am a firm believer in the need for an individualized journey in therapy as opposed to a one-size fits all cookbook approach. This is about you and your life. It's deeper than some technique or strategy. And so therapy has to be founded on our relationship we build and the dynamics of it. Finding a therapist right for you is important also.

Waitlist for new clients
Clients come to me when they (or their loved ones) are dealing with anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, mood swings, challenging life events, flash backs, PTSD, or childhood trauma. I use Brainspotting, EMDR, Creative Arts therapy and other strength-based approaches to help clients build confidence, self-understanding, and concrete strategies to manage the challenges of daily life. My clients learn about the brain-body connection of their distress and challenges, building positive skills to be able to manage life’s stresses and become less overwhelmed by emotional triggers.

Sometimes life feels like a lot. It could be a past experience that keeps running through your head, a transition that was more challenging than you expected or an ongoing issue in a personal or work relationship that is keeping you from fully living. The longer you push away, dismiss or ignore the painful feelings, the harder it becomes to live the life you imagined for yourself. The effects of trauma, anxiety and depression will take their toll on you and those around you. I work with people who are ready to take the first step towards healing.

I thrive on navigating my clients through times of emotional distress, depression, anxiety, searching for meaning and purpose, need of connectedness, questioning of identity, values, looking for hope and peace. I feel confident in helping people find inner peace, mental tranquility and emotional calm through counselling and psychotherapy. I believe that a human being who is in search of reducing stress levels, boosting the quality of life, and achieving spiritual and mental sophistication and emotional stability would appreciate guidance and companionship. I would be glad to be at the service of my clients who feel this way.

I connect with those navigating mental health (namely anxiety, panic attacks, autism meltdowns), neurodivergent folks, and perinatal maternal health. You may be journeying life not feeling "on" or like yourself. Have low capacity impacting your ability to function. Not feeling well rested or grounded. Debilitating headaches, brain fog, confusion, nausea, distraction… when one or more of these states take over, you can feel on edge, helpless, frustrated, disempowered, and hopeless. Through these moments of change and transition I believe in ease and abundance ahead for us. I would be honoured to hold space for you and your story.

Hi there, I'm Tanya. I enjoy supporting youth to Millennials who are facing stress, anxiety, depression and ADHD, amongst a variety of other emotional difficulties. Life has been difficult, especially throughout these unprecedented times, and can result in troubles with worrying, focus and attention, low self-esteem, feelings of isolation, relationship issues, and overwhelming negative thoughts. It's not easy. The good news is that despite these difficulties, counselling can help turn the tide around; it offers a safe space to gain new insights, coping skills, and confidence to overcome challenges and start feeling better.

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviours differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
