I use techniques from many different modalities, including narrative therapy, emotion focused therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, existential therapy, and mindfulness, as I also have my own mindfulness practice.
Are you experiencing grief, anxiety, depression, or feelings of low self-esteem? Are you having trouble navigating your way through the loss of a loved one, a challenging relationship, or simply struggling to find meaning in your life? Many of us are knocked backwards by negative events that seem to unearth past hurts and make navigating our present and future more difficult. There are times when we need support and encouragement from outside of ourselves to help us navigate this inner world and push ourselves forward in our lives.

I work with adults of all genders during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth, and postpartum). Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by new responsibilities, experiencing shifts in your relationships, or struggling to find your identity amidst these changes, I am here to support you. As a former midwife and lactation consultant, I bring an in-depth understanding of the unique needs and challenges that individuals face during their pregnancy and postpartum journeys. As a mother myself, I understand the demands of motherhood and the untethering that can happen as we adjust to new identities, new roles, and new relationships.

I see people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, addictions, adjustment to change in their lives, relationship or family conflict, or the residual pain left from difficult childhoods or painful life events. My way of working as a therapist is to get to know you: your hopes, your talents, your problems and your unique way of thinking and expressing yourself. We then proceed with treatment based on who you are and what you need. The aim is to allow coping with your weaknesses to help you uncover your strengths, and your way forward.

Permanent recovery stems from learning to be who you needed to be when you were younger. As a holistic therapist, I help you understand the emotional experiences you're having to make sense of where they originated. We'll work together to identify the parts of yourself that need attention. Embracing all aspects of you, we'll learn that there are no bad parts, only parts that require your care and focus. When we identify the people-pleasing, chaotic, perfectionist, critical, and self-destructive parts, we can learn to be in a relationship with them. This allows us to access the adult part of ourselves to live with peace and ease.

I have recently joined forces with Psychology Matters as Director of EMDR Therapy and Business Operations. This position allows me to continue to focus on the trauma therapy work for which I have a great passion, as well as collaborating with the Psychology Matters team to meet the greater needs of our community. Having worked in this field for 17 years I've gained a deep appreciation for the influence of our early development on our present ability to cope. With this and the framework of EMDR I am witnessing amazing growth in the people that I am working with.

In the years I've been practising as a psychotherapist, I've learned the importance of developing a deep understanding of my clients and their struggles. I have eventually come to understand that this means I should strictly limit the number of clients I support. Rather than seek out as many clients as possible, I focus on a few clients in a deep and meaningful way. I am able to recall important details to make impactful connections across sessions because my focus is on a relatively small group of clients. Difficult times are inevitable. We all experience them and can sometimes use extra support.

How does existential therapy work?
Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.
Is existential therapy evidence-based?
Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.
How long does existential therapy last?
The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.
Is existential therapy effective?
According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
