Hello! My name is Shaelyn Busby and I am a fully registered psychotherapist. Are you looking for a therapist to support your child or your family in making changes? Change can be scary, difficult, and intimidating even when we know change is for the better. Family relationships are hard - especially as a child. I strive to meet my clients where they are at and empower them to have the courage to change their lives. In my practice, I use a number of different modalities to best suit the client. Every client is different so I believe every treatment plan should be tailored to the individual.

**Accepting new clients** Most couples expect to agree with their spouse far more than they actually do. The main complaints that bring couples to therapy are losing connection, high levels of conflict, major life changes and high levels of stress. Effective couples counseling and individual counselling will give you the tools you need to solve problems.

Adulting is tough at times; different life stages, different goals and opportunities. Much of our personal history influences how we approach challenges in life and how we interact with others. Family can be a source of support, or not. The same can be said about those who surround us; work, social and friend groups. I believe we have the tools within us to deal with what life throws at us. It may be a tweak or a subtle shift of thought that will make the difference, or it may take a while due to previous traumas.

I personally know how it feels to be overwhelmed by the demands of school, work, everyday responsibilities and personal relationships. When challenged by the symptoms of AD(H)D, anxiety or depression everyone can become burdened by life's distractions, unable to prioritize and find the time to nurture relationships, pursue personal interests, meet desired goals and find peace and happiness in our day. To facilitate the changes you would like to see, I will create a safe place to process relationship issues, symptoms related to AD(H)D, trauma, depression, anxiety that have impacted your quality of life.

Do you feel like you are running on auto-pilot? Do you sometimes feel disconnected from your emotions? Or perhaps you feel surprised by the intensity of your emotional reactions at times. It’s easy to go through life reacting to stressors, without the awareness, language or understanding of what we are feeling or reacting to. Most of us haven't been taught in school or at home how to process through our emotions, yet understanding how and why we react as we do, can improve our relationship with ourselves and others.

Much like other relationships, experience of therapy is co-created by the client and the therapist. I see the job of the therapist as providing a safe environment where the client has the time and space to make sense of their life experiences and maintain a sense of self as worthy of acceptance, kindness, and care.

I work with youth and adults who are struggling with cumulative stress, anxiety, or trauma and want to develop a sense of emotional stability and well-being; they're looking for a therapist who can be authentic. Going beyond traditional talk therapy, I use somatic (body-based) psychotherapy in healing trauma, including developmental trauma - childhood abuse, neglect, or caregiver misattunement. Somatic therapy is a gentle, experiential approach that integrates awareness of body sensations to allow the body, mind and emotions to heal from trauma, so you can feel more connected and engaged in your life.

I see therapy as a safe space to explore our inner worlds while developing an awareness of how the external world impacts us. I seek to support clients in accessing their internal wisdom and sense of self to become more attuned to their needs and live a life more aligned with their hopes and dreams. As a holistic therapist, I recognize the interconnected nature of the mind, body, and soul. My approach to holistic healing and transformation draws inspiration from conventional psychotherapy methods while integrating diverse holistic practices that foster well-being for the mind, body, and soul.

Hello, thank you for reading my profile. My passion is to help you feel more fulfilled, empowered, and present in your life. Life is hard, trauma is real, and inequality is systemic. I provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to feel how you feel, as you come to better understand your thoughts, experiences, and relationships. I believe we each possess unique inner strengths and resources to help us move through life and get out of our heads (and into the moment). My personal and ongoing experience with grief allows me to meet you 'where you are', at your own pace, as we co-develop strategies that work for you.

Do you worry about what you ‘should’ be doing or feeling? Juggling work and personal commitments can lead you to feel like there’s never enough time to get everything done. Worrying about the future, or looking back on what you could have done better in the past, can feel overwhelming. This cycle of feeling like you’re not living up to your own expectations, or those of other people, can make you feel unsettled, off-balance and like you’re not fully present in your own life.

If you're feeling anxious, afraid or overwhelmed, you're not alone. These are some of the most common uncomfortable feelings people experience today. As a result, you may feel like you've lost your motivation or find yourself making excuses to avoid social situations. Perhaps you're experiencing conflict in your relationships or your negative self-talk is preventing you from moving forward. Perhaps you're one of many exhausted caregivers needing support. Regardless of your situation, learning to cope with difficult emotions can be hard. You need some relief but don't know where to start. I can help.

Currently accepting new in-person and virtual clients! Life is a journey that no one should walk alone. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally or physically exhausted, hurt, or isolated, I am here to walk with you. I strive to foster a compassionate, warm, and non-judgemental atmosphere for you to explore your current challenges. Together, we will identify your goals, learn your strengths, and develop an individualized treatment plan that feels good to you. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to counselling, which is why I use a client-centred, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach to therapy.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
