My ideal psychotherapy client is an individual who is motivated to explore their inner world. Someone who willing to explore, and possibly reevaluate bedrock assumptions that play a major role in influencing our current attitudes and life choices. An ideal client also recognizes that a therapist's role is not to provide answers but rather to facilitate a process of self discovery which promotes emotional growth and lays the foundation for enduring change.

You're in a lot of pain. It might be a sharp, edgy, "I think there must be something really wrong here" type of distress, or a dull, achy, "Life has got to be better than this" kind of despair. You can point to things around you that aren't as they should be, or you have experienced enough trauma to fill a book, but just knowing this hasn't gotten you or your loved one any closer to peace, let alone joy. It's as if there's something hidden, something below the surface, something you can't quite identify, that's holding onto the pain really that's in the way of feeling fully alive.

Sometimes we don’t have the words to describe exactly what’s wrong with us. All we know is that we feel completely exhausted by all of it. We feel it in our bones. We’re having trouble keeping up with our lives and feel like we keep repeating the same mistakes — like we keep letting people down. We keep trying to fix it, but nothing seems to work. We might resort to hiding all or part of ourselves because we think it’ll just make it easier for everyone. But the loneliness we feel from hiding all or part of ourselves from our families, friends, and loved ones can feel insidious and insurmountable.

It’s not always easy being human, is it? I find that the greatest gift of therapy, when there is a strong air of compassion, presence and curiosity in the therapeutic alliance, is the ability to reclaim our needs, our full range of feelings, our joy and our aliveness. While building skills of mindfulness, self-compassion, and embodied awareness, I believe there is immense possibility that lies in our unfolding wholeness, waiting to be discovered - creative choice made more accessible, when we're less held back by our fears, our core beliefs, and pain that we've had to organize around to survive.

Every single person will need compassionate support, personalized guidance and wisdom, at some point in their lives. If you have a history of trauma, a painful childhood, or have suffered from anxiety/depression for a long time, then this is even more true of you. Emotions and thoughts can be confusing and even hurtful to yourself and others. Some mental states are so complex, that seem to be layer upon layer of suffering. Life can be a rollercoaster and healthy stable relationships appear to be too much work! Imagine not to be defined by your history or struggles. Imagine being able to tap into joy and inner strength at any time!

You deserve to be happy...and you don't need to struggle alone. Stress, worry, sadness, restlessness, frustration, anger, loss, or loneliness can all feel overwhelming at times...but care, connection, treatment, healing, and empowerment are all within reach. Within psychotherapy... insight, understanding, self-awareness, tools for coping, better functioning, and new ways of relating or behaving are all part of the process of change that you may be hoping for. Whether it be unresolved issues from the past or present circumstances and challenges, a safe, respectful, accepting, patient, and encouraging therapeutic space can be surprisingly rewarding, and make more of a difference than expected.

We usually don't seek psychotherapy when we are already feeling great. It often becomes a crucial step after trying everything else. In my approach to psychotherapy, I aim to create a safe and supportive space where we can discover new ways to negotiate your emotional needs. Our goal would be to enhance your well-being in all areas of your life—whether it's relationships, work, or enjoying your free time. Through psychotherapy, I've seen people undergo remarkable changes in how they see themselves and connect with others, leading to a deeper sense of fulfillment in life.

Welcome! In my practice, I use an integrative approach to meet the unique needs of each client and family I work with.  This includes practicing with a relational, attachment focused, and strengths-based theoretical base, along with an anti-oppressive and trauma-informed framework with clients. I incorporate modalities such as mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy. These modalities can help clients gain insight into their circumstances, empower them towards/reach their goals and learn ways to effectively manage life’s challenges.

I am here to support you in your healing process so that you can live a joyful and vibrant life. Whether your pain has manifested as depression, anxiety, overwhelm, addictive tendencies, relationship or parenting challenges, or difficulty navigating a particular life transition, I will help you understand the why. My clients experience changes in their day-to-day lives, as well as profound shifts in their inner worlds. I also pay special attention to the wellbeing of your inner child; we live in a world with very little space for children to develop safely and wholly so most of still bear emotional wounds from our early development.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
