I offer you a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental approach. You may want to talk about anything from family or relationship issues, anxiety, anger, depression, loss or whatever is important to you. All of us experience emotional difficulties at some point in our lives. We can find it hard to cope. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space where you can talk about what is happening in your life, explore thoughts and feelings, find ways to cope and help begin to think about a way forward. Counselling can offer general support or can focus on more specific issues.

I offer a warm and compassionate approach that aims to hold you and your family while you engage with the therapeutic process.
I offer a child centred approach. I will form a trusting relationship with you and your child to enable you to achieve your therapeutic goals. I believe in a combined approach which is humanistic and analytical, therefore I am adaptable and use a range of approaches to help you meet your goals. I also integrate a directive approach, this is important for children who experience emotional overwhelm or have traumatic blocks.

I work holistically with clients – looking at the mind/body connection, family, friendships and significant relationships, cultural/ancestral heritage, beliefs and diversity.
I'm Rachel. I'm an Integrative Relational Therapist based in Brighton, working in-person, online and over the phone. I'm Integrative because I draw from knowledge and experience of different psychotherapeutic models and skills. I'm Relational because I believe that the relationship that I help to build with clients is one of the most important aspects of effective therapy.

It all involves looking at your problems through a completely different lens – Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Sometimes we long for change, or find ourselves asking, ‘What is WRONG with me?’. Perhaps there’s an obvious reason - loss, life worries or a troubled relationship. Just as bad is when you can’t find a reason, you feel ‘nothing’. You lose emotional connection to life, others and yourself. This leads to inner conflict – different parts of you seem to want different things. One part is lonely, another is scared to connect. One part wants success, another wants to zone out. One part wants confidence, another wants to hide behind the curtains. You end up gridlocked into feelings and a life you don't want. I know, I've been there.

Our feelings about ourselves are not just shaped by our personal experiences, family and relationships, but also the communities and society we live in, and I bring this into my therapy, exploring how social norms and expectations might impact how you feel about yourself.
Our mental health is connected with how we feel about ourselves and our life experiences. I offer a safe counselling relationship in which you can better understand these experiences, the challenges and struggles you face, and work out how you can respond. I will work to create a relationship with you in which you can feel safe enough to talk about difficult or painful experiences, thoughts and feelings. I will not judge you, no matter what you need to talk about. My aim is to help you start to connect with and feel differently about yourself. This can lead to greater self-awareness and acceptance.

You may be struggling to keep anxiety, stress, loneliness or depression at arm's length, coping with family conflict, childhood trauma, ADHD, chronic illness or difficulties related to sexuality and relationships.
I am an experienced, welcoming and open-minded counsellor. Exploring in-depth what is troubling us with someone who is really listening, not just to your words but to the person behind them, can in itself be a healing process. It may also bring to light beliefs and ways of living that are holding you back. I draw on a range of integrative talking therapies (including Internal Family Systems). When something more is needed than talking alone, Brainspotting (a somatic therapy that evolved out of EMDR) can offer a gentle but powerful way to access deeper areas of the brain where emotional difficulties arise.

As well as eating disorders, I have experience working with a wide range of issues, including trauma, depression, anxiety and other emotional difficulties, low self-confidence, problems in relationships, family issues, abuse, grief and loss.
I specialise in trauma, EMDR and eating disorders, as an accredited integrative therapist and clinical supervisor. In my work with eating disorders, I help people suffering from bulimia, binge eating disorder and anorexia, as well as those with OSFED or atypical presentations. I also supervise eating disorder therapists. I offer emotional exploration and practical guidance to help you improve your relationship with food and with yourself, improve your body image and self-esteem, and move past your symptoms toward your life aspirations. As a side note, I made a full recovery from bulimia, which seemed impossible to me at the time.

Additionally, I have 18 years of experience in university support, teaching and research roles - much of which focused on family and relationship research.
I have spent the last 18 years studying human behaviour, relationships, and the workings of the mind – formerly in university teaching, research and support roles and now, as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor supporting individuals and couples with psychological, emotional and relationship difficulties. My focus is on the whole person rather than solely addressing specific symptoms or issues, which means our therapeutic process will consider all parts of you, mind, body, spirit and soul, as well as the social and cultural aspects of your experience.

I specialise in Anxiety, Depression and Family Conflict and additional expertise supporting students with Academic Anxiety including those with Dyslexia & Autism Spectrum.
If you've arrived here, you are already thinking about counselling. You might feel depressed, anxious or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to cope with the challenges of life. Perhaps you have experienced a recent loss, had a sudden change of circumstances or are struggling with relationships. Maybe you don't even know what's troubling you. Research shows positive change happens when there is a good match between client and counsellor. It’s difficult to choose a counsellor or know what to expect from counselling without having a face-to-face meeting. This is why I offer a reduced rate intro session of £15 where we can meet

I take an integrative approach, meaning I draw on different techniques from psychodynamic and systemic family therapy, then once the past begins to become clearer I often integrate additional therapeutic methods such as Narrative Therapy (NT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT).
I’m a registered and accredited therapist with lots of experience of working with adults, young people, couples and families. I offer a secure and confidential space where we can address and navigate the concerns you bring, and together we'll delve into the impact of past events on your current life and relationships. My style is compassionate and non-judgemental but challenging enough to ensure positive change can occur. I will adapt my style, approach and methods according to your needs or situation, and I will work at your pace.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
