Being a parent or guardian is one of the toughest roles, and finding the right approach to support your child or young person can feel just as challenging. Is your child experiencing overwhelming feelings and emotions that are causing them to behave in a different way? At all stages of a child's development there are physical, cognitive, and emotional changes which can cause disruption to their lives and the lives of the people who are closest to them. These may be related to bullying, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, disruptive or rebellious behaviour, sleeping patterns, unable to cope, sadness, and general low mood.

Life can feel very complicated and challenging which at times will impact on our mental health and how we feel about things. Trying to unravel those feelings on our own can feel impossible. There are many reasons someone will speak to a counsellor; may be you are struggling with anxiety, depression or panic attacks. You might be going through relationship difficulties, bereavement or a change in your circumstances. Or may be you are struggling with things that have happened in your past that you can't let go of. Whatever the reason talking to a qualified counsellor can and will help.

Hi – my name is Jo.  I’m a Counselling Psychotherapist and I work with adults and young people. Sometimes life will present us with challenges and difficulties that we struggle to make sense of, or that make us feel stuck and unable to move forward positively. Not knowing what to do or how to be when we have these experiences can create a diverse set of uncomfortable feelings. Its different for everyone...whilst one person may feel overwhelmed or isolated, another may struggle with anger, anxiety or depression. Perhaps this sounds like you?

It's really normal to worry about starting therapy.
Hi, thanks for stopping by to check me out. It’s not easy to reach out for help and it can be hard to know what you need from the many services and therapists on offer. Like others I work with, you might find it hard to trust in people and open up. You may have gotten good at hiding your hurt and pain? Maybe you’re worried you’re making a big deal over things that you should have moved on from by now? Perhaps you’re ashamed that these things happened in the first place or feel embarrassed that they still bother you? It might feel wrong to feel sad when some things in your life are going well and others have it so much harder?

My practice is informed by my Masters in Autism/PGC in Asperger’s and also from a long relationship with an Asperger’s individual. I am also a mother to Asperger’s individuals. Additionally, I have just completed six years of body psychotherapy studies with Cambridge Body Psychotherapy Centre.

Everyone has a way of looking at the world, its events, and their place in it that is personal to them. Consequently, there is no one size fits all in therapeutic approach. Psychotherapy can be a powerful, life changing experience in the right hands. It focuses on understanding how you see the world and interpret the life you have, and want. Good mental health affects so many aspects of life. For example studies on the interaction between the mind, nervous system and the immune system illustrate that there is a connection between relieving stress and related immune processes.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
