I’m Jemma (she/her). I offer warm, nurturing and inclusive Art Psychotherapy sessions to children, adolescents and adults. With a particular interest in working with relational/intergenerational trauma, neurodivergence, gender dysphoria, bereavement, suicidality, and self-harm. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic practice, focusing on how our early attachments to our caregivers have influence on the way we meet, see and function in the world around us.

As I work relationally and with unconscious processes I work well with any presenting issues that are related to attachment. These may be experienced as anxiety, depression, OCD, bereavement issues, substance use etc. You may have difficulties forming meaningful lasting relationships or have recognised a pattern in things going wrong in your life which make you unhappy. You may have current issues with your children that are echoing past hurts of your own that need attending to. I can help you to explore these issues within the safe and holding relationship that we can create together.

Hello, my name is Rebecca and i am an Art psychotherapist and EMDR trainee. I help people who may be feeling depressed, anxious, experiencing PTSD symptoms, experienced loss or need a space to explore past experiences and relationships. I believe the therapeutic relationship to be the most important part of therapy to help transform experiences of trauma and loss. Together we start where you feel safe and think about your goals for therapy. Sometimes words are too difficult and we need another tool to help talk. The use of art materials whilst speaking can create a non-intrusive and gentle way to explore past experiences.

I am a psychotherapist and group analyst and have been a therapist for nearly 30 years in many different settings. In my approach, I am interested in making connections between experiences and difficulties in the present, with events and relationships from the past. In my experience, difficulties people experience as adults can often be part of a repeated pattern. I will be curious about relationships in your life but also the way you relate to yourself and to others. This will include how it is in the therapy relationship - whether individually or group.

Sometimes children and young people can behave in ways that are difficult to understand. As their parents/carers, we can feel confused as to what might be happening for our child and how we can best help them. Your child might be behaving in ways that frighten you (e.g. violent outbursts or self-harming behaviours) or in other ways that concern you (e.g. increasingly anxious or withdrawn behaviour, refusing school etc.). You may have attended parenting courses, read books or spoken to friends/family, but still feel at a loss as to what to do to help your child and how to feel connected to them again. Now is the time to seek help.

It can be really unsettling to deal with negative emotions by ourselves and to not know what we can do to help ourselves to feel better. I have been guiding clients for 16 years to achieve a resilient emotional stability and a more balanced sense of self-worth.

Life can be challenging at times and we can struggle to understand why we feel unhappy, worried and disconnected with people close to us. Often being able to talk about these difficult feelings with someone without judgement in full confidence to explore problems, hopes and fears. Whether struggling with anxiety and or depression, reaching out is the first step towards recovery.

Being human isn't easy... We all have times in life where things feel too much to cope with alone. Maybe you feel stuck, or lost. Maybe you’ve lost sight of what is important, or feel like life lacks hope or purpose. It might have been a long time coming and you’ve been feeling like this for a while, or maybe something has happened which has left you shocked, numb or filled with sadness, anger, or fear.

The emotional and physical impact of challenges in life can cause our minds and bodies to react in ways that don't help us. I can help you to work with your mind and body so you can live a life you choose. I specialise in supporting people with anxiety (e.g. health anxiety, social anxiety, generalised or phobias), stress and trauma/ PTSD. You may be feeling a sense of unease whilst not being sure why, that's ok too. I draw from a few therapeutic approaches to tailor sessions to your unique preferences and needs. I aim to understand your core values and personality and support you to live a life more aligned with who you are.

Hello and welcome to my personal page. I understand that, at times, life can be tough. We can all feel overwhelmed, anxious or depressed. Life events or circumstances may have caused you to feel lost, sad, frightened, angry or panicky. You may be having negative thoughts. Are you experiencing work-related stress, medical/health issues or having difficulty with communication or relationships? Do you think you may have dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD or possibly autism/Asperger's? Everyone's story and reason for seeking therapy is different and it can take courage to ask for help.

I believe that it's through a secure therapeutic relationship that an individual can gain self awareness, insight and a deeper understanding of their feelings and concerns to grow, to re engage in life and move forward to reach their full potential.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
