I understand that revealing your thoughts and feelings to a stranger is not always easy, I have utilised therapy myself in previous years for things such as post-natal depression, work-related anxiety, empty nest syndrome & bereavement.
Life can be unpredictable and some experiences can cause reactions we don’t fully understand. Counselling can help gain relief and clarity, helping you to find a healthier way forward. Hearing your thoughts and feelings out loud, in the presence of a trained professional can bring about shifts in awareness and perception. Facing your concerns or fears can feel empowering, helping you to feel more in control. My aim is to provide a warm, welcoming safe environment where together we can explore any worries, problems or issues that are causing you any distress, sadness or anxiety.

My approach is non-judgmental and I offer a secure, confidential and nurturing therapeutic space to help you through your difficulties at your own pace. I got into counselling because of having counselling myself so am aware of the difficulties facing finding the right counselor and what it's like having therapy. Even with this knowledge your process will be different and you will have your own sense of the pain you are experiencing. What I offer is my ability to help you walk through this pain with empathy and safety.

I know that when we feel stressed, lonely, and in discomfort we need appropriate help as soon, and as easily, as possible.
Are you struggling with IBS? Always worrying about where the nearest loo is? Or what is safe to eat? You are not alone! Approximately 10% of the world does too. Unfortunately, we aren't always fully informed about all our treatment options. If you notice your gut symptoms are often worse when you are stressed, busy, or worrying, then a psychological approach can help. Did you know that IBS is now recognised as a Gut-Brain Axis condition, rather than a functional gut problem? This means it's necessary to address the mind, body, and the connection between them to enable you to take control of your stress, your bowels, and your life.

Reaching out can be difficult, but something has led you here today.
The reasons we seek counselling are many and varied. Sometimes there is a sudden loss or trauma, but sometimes there are layers of difficult experiences where one more is too many, and we can become overwhelmed. These may be current events or traumatic experiences from long ago that continue to affect life today. We may begin to distance ourselves from friends and family as we try to make sense of difficult feelings and emotions alone. Perhaps because we don't want to burden others or from unresolved or misplaced feelings of guilt or shame. Reaching out for support can be difficult, but contacting me is easy, please get in touch.

I have worked in Mental Health for over 20 years in Primary and Secondary Care, working with Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Personality Disorders, Addiction, Abuse, Obsessive Compulsive Behaviours and many other psychological difficulties.
How you feel about yourself and your worth can impact on you every day and in every relationship. You may have difficulties with family members or in friendships and more personal relationships. You may find it difficult to voice your needs. Reflecting on how we are with others and with our self can be revealing and bring about change. This can help you to be more present and involved in your life. These thoughts and feelings didn’t develop overnight and I provide you with a confidential space to support you in this exploration for lasting change. I am still able to see clients face to face following government Covid Guidelines.

In our first session, we'll meet to discuss what brings you to therapy, address any questions or concerns you might have, and see whether it feels right for us to work together.
Asking for help can be a monumental decision that requires a lot of courage. Finding the right therapist can be an equally difficult task. A therapeutic relationship needs to feel safe and collaborative, as it can serve as a foundation for healing.

Our initial assessment is an important first step in understanding your reasons for pursuing therapy, your therapeutic goals, expectations, and learning a bit about your background and current situation.
Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming. To see whether we might be a good fit, I offer a free 30 minute introductory call to discuss your situation and needs. I am an integrative psychotherapist (MBACP) practicing in Clapham, London Bridge and Dulwich. I also offer sessions online and over the phone. Much of my approach is about noticing and understanding patterns, and making sense of these. I am also trauma informed.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
