For free consultations, feel free to contact me via email or telephone.
I’ve practiced as an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist since 2009 and mental health nurse for the past 20 years for the NHS and private sector. Both professions combined enable me to work with mild to severe mental health conditions. I have a special interest working with individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic communities and mixed heritage. I can also provide clinical supervision for newly qualified CBT therapists. I am currently working towards my BABCP Supervision Accreditation. My approach is curious and collaborative. I will endeavour to tailor the course of treatment to meet the individual’s needs.

My role is to help you resolve and move on from your difficulties and live more in the present without being triggered into old feelings.
Are you are anxious, depressed, stressed and struggling to cope? Are you feeling that old issues and feelings are overwhelming you? As an EMDR Practitioner, I can help with these unmanageable feelings. In an initial session we can discuss your problems, your goals and work out a treatment plan. I offer EMDR and we target specific traumatic experiences and symptoms. A large body of neuroscience research has found that working at a subcortical level, using EMDR, effectively reprocesses experiences that are stuck in your body and your nervous system. After EMDR you are likely to feel much less dys-regulated.

I know that taking that first step can be daunting, but my own experience has taught me that talking with a skilled, empathic therapist can lead to positive, life long change.
Are you feeling depressed, confused about what you feel, ground down to the point where you feel unable to cope, or simply wishing you could talk to someone and feel understood? Individuals choose therapy for a variety of reasons and often the biggest hurdle to getting help is an inner voice telling us our problems are nothing special and we should "just get on with it". I provide a safe, empathic environment where you can talk about your concerns without fear of being judged and to provide you with the means to work out your own answers and create the life you want.

Waitlist for new clients
Accredited by the BACP and a Life Coach for 5 years before training as a counsellor.
At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed, angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

Talking to someone about these important things takes courage.
I approach therapy from a systemic and integrative perspective, my experience has shown me that people and their lives, are complex, layered, and multifaceted. So, any therapeutic approach should reflect and accommodate this. It can be useful to consider how past relationships have become patterns for current ones. Working together to explore family and background experiences can prove useful when considering current issues. I work with adults (18+) face to face at my practice in Hove or by Zoom. My approach is supportive, collaborative and reflective, aiming to deepen your self-understanding and help you to explore choices.

My name is Volker.
I understand what it means to be anxious and close to burn out. Whether you might have problems around confidence, anxiety, depression, stress or low self esteem, I can help you to deal with it. Working with hypnosis and speech therapy, I can combine the best methods to make you feel better. Additionally, working with middle aged men, I often find that when we get to midlife, there is something that we want to explore. This nagging feeling we had for years, and now it's time to look deeper into it. We might have lost one of our parents and want to understand where some of our feelings are coming from.

I am open and flexible in my approach, preferring to tailor our sessions to your needs rather than working to a set formula.
Perhaps you are experiencing problems in your relationships, anxiety or panic attacks, low mood or depression. You might be struggling at work, have low self esteem, lack self confidence or be grieving the loss of a relationship or loved one. Many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling can give you the support and space you need to help you gain a better understanding of what’s causing your problems and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.

I understand how hard it is to reach out.
Everyone struggles at different times and sometimes it can feel too much for us alone. If you would like to talk with a professional, someone unconnected to your family and friends, I would like to offer my help. I aim to create a warm, safe therapeutic space and will work with you in a way that is guided by you and your needs.

Just like with so many things in life, you're more likely to regret not coming to therapy to deal with your issues, or coming what may then feel "late" than approaching me (or someone else) to talk and explore your issues now.
I am an experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist and a BACP-accredited psychodynamic counsellor. I believe that no issue is too small nor too great to bring to therapy – if it causes you pain, you will benefit from opening up about it in the long run. I believe everyone’s internal world needs to be approached with curiosity and openness. My approach is rooted in traditional psychoanalysis but progressive and affirmative of diversity and individual expression. It is suitable for adults of all ages and backgrounds and also LGBTQ/kink and poly-friendly.

We all have an internal landscape that may feel scary or risky to share, it may not be how we want to present in the world, and often there are conflicts between our internal and external worlds.

I am passionate about supporting and empowering people to move through areas of restriction or suffering in their lives. I will witness and understand you as an individual, supporting you to embrace more of your full potential. The foundation is a safe, compassionate, honest and non-judgemental space and relationship, combined with effective practices.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
