As a therapist, I believe our personal experiences have a profound impact on how we perceive and interact with the world around us. We receive messages on how we should live our lives, and we learn to accommodate those messages in hopes to "fit in" with society. As an Asian gay man and being sent to boarding school, I understand the challenges of living authentically while also trying to honour the norms, values, and expectations of the community you come from.

Hi, a safe supporting space is what I can offer you, where you can explore whatever it is that has brought you here. Together we can help you find some inner peace. You don’t have to journey alone anymore. It’s taken courage to get this far, metaphorically I’ll be there holding the pain you carry to help lighten the load, and help shed light where the darkness has been. I offer a nonjudgmental, confidential and caring space for you to talk freely about anything that is bothering you. Together we will help you find authenticity and happiness.

Do you feel like something is holding you back from fully enjoying relationships? Is fear of rejection preventing you from letting people in, and starting new relationships? Is something pushing you away from the bonds you crave? Do you feel misunderstood and lonely? Are you curious about why relationships keep ending in the same way? Feeling stuck? Relationships shouldn’t suck!

I am passionate about empowering clients to develop or strengthen their own sense of agency in the world, so that they feel in control. In order to do this, I work collaboratively with clients rather than acting as an expert. I walk alongside my clients in their therapeutic journey, rather than taking the lead and instructing which can at times feel disempowering. Whilst I use my knowledge and expertise to help clients consider new ways of viewing the world and offer guidance on ways they may consider changing their behaviours to better suit their needs, I do not act as an "expert" as I believe each person knows themselves best.

Counselling provides a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to share difficult and confused feelings. As a counsellor I do not provide solutions or instructions but facilitate exploration and discovery. Counselling is not an easy process and it can bring up difficult, conflicting and confusing feelings that may have been buried for some time. During therapy, we together, seek to understand how your current emotional and psychological difficulties can have their origin in thoughts and feelings that are unconscious to you and may be located somewhere in past childhood experiences.

I am great at supporting people to grow to be the best, most fully functioning version of themselves. The barrier to this is unique to you. You may have a difficult past, problems in the present or fear about the future. I know you'll need to feel safe to speak about deep feelings and it can take time for this trust to develop. It will help if you are willing to be kind to yourself and to work with me to find a way to say the things that feel most difficult or scary. It can be useful to try to be curious about yourself, to notice and name thoughts and feelings as they arise, I will listen without judgment.

I have over 25 years of experience helping adults to make lasting change. Building a trusting relationship with a therapist who makes you feel understood is the most important basis for any work towards change and growth. There is a lot of self-help material out there, and most people will work very hard to try things on their own to feel better. But doing all this alone can sometimes feel lonely and overwhelming or rather stuck if nothing seems to be working. If that is the case for you, I hope that you will reach out and we can work together to make sense of things and empower you to be able to make the changes you seek.

We all face emotional difficulties at some point that stop us from enjoying life as much as we would like. Talking to friends and family can be helpful, but sometimes this isn't possible or doesn't feel enough. Whether you're finding things challenging personally or in your relationship, or you have a sense that you could be more connected with yourself and others in your life, therapy can offer a unique opportunity to explore whatever is troubling you, and can help by providing you with support and understanding.

It can feel hard, sometimes impossible, to change the way we think, behave and react to certain situations. If you gain an increased understanding by exploring patterns then this can help you make sense of things, which can help you feel more in control and manage emotions that otherwise feel overwhelming. The therapeutic relationship is unique. I lay the foundation for the work we can do together. Feeling truly understood can be a rare experience that allows you to open up and to discover more about yourself. With an increased self-awareness can come a more regulated way of being and thinking.

Hi! I’m Sarah and I'm a Counselling Psychologist. I have over 10 years of clinical experience. I work in an NHS Community Mental Health Team for Kensington and Chelsea. I am experienced working with adults and adolescents including those with neurodevelopmental disorders: autism and ADHD. The most essential ingredient to successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship. My aim is to provide a welcoming and compassionate space built on trust, respect and understanding. During the assessment process we would identify your therapy goals and use this as a guide for formulating a treatment plan to help you make a positive difference.

I am a relationship-focused therapist working with couples, individuals, and parents. By understanding our attachment style and gaining insight into how we offer and receive connection, we can grow and form meaningful relationships with our beloveds. At the heart of my couples therapy work is IMAGO Relationship therapy. Imago Relationship Therapy helps couples to identify their core needs and triggers and to communicate them to their partner in a non-confrontational and constructive way. I also integrate Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy (RLT).

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
