I’m an Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with over 20 years of clinical experience, working with individuals and couples.
People consider starting therapy for a variety of challenges. Sometimes you may find yourself repeating patterns from the past, getting stuck in relationships which may not be helpful to you or you might be overwhelmed by feelings of depression or anxiety. I offer an attachment-based psychoanalytic approach to therapy, which has at its core an understanding of the importance of relationships throughout life and how problems and distress in the present may be related to early experiences. Making sense of your feelings and experiences will help you develop your own choices and resources to change your life.

However, I frequently use attachment-based theory and Gestalt practices as therapeutic tools.
Hello, I'm Rhiana. I'm an integrative psychotherapist and counsellor. We all have times when we need someone impartial, caring and present to listen to us. Therefore, I endeavour to co-create clear therapeutic goals that will help to elicit change. I work with a variety of clients looking for someone to help them understand their concerns, from a place of non-judgment. I specialise in working with depression, relationship issues, social isolation and identity confusion.

I am a senior Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and an Analytical Psychologist/Jungian Analyst.
The choice to start psychotherapy may come for a variety of reasons. Becoming aware of repeating patterns of behaviour, struggling in personal and professional relationships, coming to terms with a particular traumatic event, or with feelings of depression, lack of purpose and meaning. Ultimately, there will be a unique reason for each person. Whilst my work takes into account the influence of the past onto the present, it also places as much attention to the future and to the fact that in the present psychological suffering there may be the potential for a meaningful new direction.

I work from a psychoanalytic perspective with an attachment-based focus, providing my clients a space to explore how their past might be influencing their life at present, as well as the ways they relate and connect to others. In the therapeutic process I help clients to gain insight into their state of mind by bringing the unconscious to a conscious level. Alongside these processes, I pay dedicated attention to the quality of the relationship between myself and the clients. This combination is a powerful vehicle for facilitating a meaningful change in the clients’ lives.

Hello, I am a Counselling Psychologist and work with adults and children who are struggling to cope with different types of distress. This might be depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, OCD, addictions, bereavement, gender identity, trauma, relationship difficulties etc. Whatever difficulties you are having, we would begin with an assessment to learn more about what brings you to therapy, think about your goals for treatment and formulate a plan for which approach might be most helpful. It is also an opportunity for you to see if you feel we are the right fit.

Sometimes life throws up challenges that are too hard to cope with alone and therapy provides a safe and confidential place to work through those challenges. Whether you're experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship problems or recurrent issues from your past, working with a trained therapist can help. There is no set formula for therapy but by talking through your problems in a non-judgemental space, you can gain more clarity on how you're feeling and why. With this new self-knowledge and insight, we can identify new ways of being that are more helpful to you now.

I help people to feel better about themselves and empowered to make positive changes to their lives. Being truly heard (perhaps for the first time) by someone who will never judge, dictate to, or betray you, can be a profoundly healing experience. With growing trust and commitment, negative thoughts and feelings can be explored, understood and overcome. Regrets about the past and fears for the future can be replaced by fulfilment in the present.

"I just want to talk about everything that is going on...!". "I want to be happy". "I am looking for a place to vent". "Some days the world is too big". "I do not know what is happening to me". "I am sad". "I am anxious". "I am stressed". "Work is too much". "I feel lonely". "I have a problem with my partner, friends, children, teachers, family, work colleagues...". These are some of the things that I had heard from friends, relatives, colleagues, clients over the years when they are looking for a different point of view or extra support in their life.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
