Do you ever think that your life could be so much happier or more satisfying than it is? Counselling could be the first step towards making it so. Many of us grow up with negative influences around us: indifference, criticism, insecurity, rejection, sometimes even hostility and aggression. As we grow up we find ourselves absorbing these energies, and in adult life they show up as low self-esteem, as anxiety, as outbursts of rage or as depression. They interfere with our work, with our relationships and with our ability to enjoy and make the most of our lives.

Hello. Are you struggling with the impact of traumatic or difficult experiences in your life? Feeling frightened, sad, stuck in unhelpful patterns of thinking about yourself or relating to others? Therapy could help you to move forward in your life. My priority in working with you would be to help you to understand how the feelings, thoughts or behaviours that you are struggling with now are linked to experiences in your life. We would then think about how you can develop new ways of being, that fit more with how you want your life to be. I have over 20 years experience of working with people struggling with various concerns.

Do you lie awake at night worrying or wake up feeling sick with stress? I have a special interest in working with people who are stressed (including work or parental stress), traumatic stress, and anxiety (including health and death anxiety). I am particularly interested in working with people who, no matter how much they achieve in work or life, often experience frequent self-doubt that they are 'good enough'. My professional background as a psychotherapist includes working in the NHS, various mental health settings, including Anxiety UK, and private practice.

Have you recently been through a loss of any kind? Perhaps it was someone you were close to? Or maybe your health has taken a turn for the worse? Perhaps you have split up with your partner? Or are you trying to cope with an unexpected change but find yourself struggling? Are you asking yourself why is my life so hard? Why can’t things just get back to being “normal?” Loss of any kind and change of any kind can come out of the blue and can turn your life upside down. Are you needing to talk to someone about how you are really feeling?

Thank you very much for visiting my page. I am a Person Centred counsellor based in Seaford and I rent a room in the town centre. I aim to offer a safe place which is free of judgement and a positive atmosphere where we can explore whatever you may wish to bring to each session. In return I’ll also offer honesty and transparency to help build our relationship. I endeavour to work with you as an individual and not just on an individual problem. A personal favourite analogy of mine is “I will attempt to put your shoes on and walk with you but I won’t do up the laces”.

Having experienced at first hand the hugely positive impact counselling has had on my own life, I chose to train as a psychodynamic therapist to help others experience the same profound benefits. I now use an integrative approach, which has enriched my work with clients. Working with you, we will together examine and uncover often unconscious or repressed memories which in turn can drive unhelpful patterns of behaviour. We will explore the sources of your problems and aim to deal with the underlying issues, not just try to find a way to cope with them. Only by making peace with the past can you look forward to a happy future.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

Understanding ourselves, the decisions and choices we make and our relationships with others can sometimes be baffling. You may find yourself acting or behaving in ways that you struggle to align with your personal principles, wishes or desires. At times, your experience may suggest that your way of being doesn't blend with the world around you and you might find yourself meeting resistance from people or institutions. Therapy gives us the chance to explore these challenges together. We can look at your relationships with others and the meaning you make of them, helping to develop your insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

I run my private practice on Tuesdays between 10am-7pm offering remote sessions either by Zoom or telephone - please visit my website for more info. Contact me to arrange a free 30 minute introductory session to help you decide whether I am the right person to work with you.

I'm an experienced integrative therapist and work flexibly and dynamically with adults, couples, families and trainee counsellors. Early relationships and life events may have shaken your ability to fully value yourself or others. You might be bereaved, struggling with a relationship, experiencing depression or anxiety. I'm objective and compassionate, offering support to connect with frightening or buried feelings. Letting go of strategies that no longer work for you, without pressure or expectation, can help you to find your own truth and a sense of who you really are.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
