I accompany individuals before, during, and after pregnancy.
I am Professor Michael Atar, a psychoanalytic parent-infant psychotherapist. I work with families, parents, carers, and their children, drawing on my expertise from various life experiences such as my medical background, working as a paediatric dentist for over 25 years, and being a father of a large family with children of various ages. Whilst I do adopt a psychoanalytic observational stance, I don’t approach therapy from the position of “expert”. My belief in therapy focuses on awareness, understanding, and gentle support. As the word therapy suggests facilitating and serving, my work emphasises a collaborative experience.

Welcome! I’m Jess, a clinical psychologist specialising in trauma, self-esteem, anxiety and low mood, relationship difficulties, and perinatal wellbeing. My passion lies in offering compassionate and gold-standard therapies, working from the philosophy that we are all doing our best to survive at any given time. I understand that we have often developed strategies that helped us cope with adversities in the past, but have come to keep us stuck in distress. I help people to understand their triggers, stuck patterns, and learn strategies (inc. the science behind them) that will help them move towards new, empowered, ways forward.

I have a special interest in working with parents, from pregnancy, birth and beyond.
Have you stopped doing the things you used to enjoy? Do you spend more time looking after others than yourself? Are you feeling resentful and or under appreciated? I can help you to find the time to reconnect to the things that once fulfilled you and to feel more appreciated and connected in your relationships.

I am also a registered member of BICA (British Infertility Counselling Association) and work with those experiencing difficulties in the perinatal period.
Regardless of your reasons for seeking counselling, your therapeutic journey is unique to you. I provide a safe, non judgemental space where we can explore any difficulties you are having in your life right now. We will also look back into your past, to try to understand patterns of behaviour that might be impacting your current life.   By exploring feelings and experiences and building self-awareness, we will work together to move towards a positive change for your future. My approach to counselling is psychodynamic which makes links from past experiences to present ways of feeling and relating to oneself and others.

I work with a broad spectrum of issues; I specialise in those related to maternal and paternal mental health and the changes that pregnancy and parenthood brings, fertility issues, birth trauma, post natal depression.
Therapy is personal journey, unique to you and directed by what you want to achieve; I trained in Relational Transactional Analysis and use this modality to support my clients' growth in self awareness and understanding of the unconscious patterns that have been driving their behaviour. Many clients can't fully articulate what they want from therapy, only that they want things to be different, this is normal, and part of the process of therapy is working with you to discover what you want. On the way we aim to discover what blocks you from achieving your goals and support you in finding new paths to reach your goal.

Hi I’m Diana. Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. Are you struggling and feel as if no one ‘gets’ it? Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed or just lost. By offering you space to explore your thoughts we can work together to help you move forward. We can find ways to overcome negative thoughts and to stop you feeling stuck.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
