Life can be a challenge in all sorts of ways, sometimes we need some independent support finding our way through those challenges. The issues affecting you may be current or things from the past that still impact you. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, loneliness and isolation. Perhaps you have experienced a bereavement, trauma or a life event that you need a safe space to process. Therapy can help you understand what you are feeling and find a way forward.

I work with a wide range of issues, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD, addictions, PTSD, phobias and issues around self-esteem. I invite clients to shape and set goals (these are often added to!) and we work together to reach them. Sometimes problems have gone on for years; sometimes they are new and acute. In both cases they can be resolved: clients move towards a life that is fulfilling, meaningful and happy. In the past year I have helped children, young people and adults, whose ages range from 10 to 85 years. Every session, from the very first, focuses on gaining understanding and making progress.

I support people presenting with a range of issues including; low self confidence, grief, addictions, generalised anxiety, depression and social anxiety.
Are you suffering from anxiety, stress or general low mood? Hi! I’m Chris, I am an experienced Art Psychotherapist and can help you to a consistent, calm and confident state of being. Life can be hard and while we hope that we will be able to cope if we’re feeling low, anxious or distressed; sometimes coping just isn’t enough. Psychotherapy can help you find structure and stability when things feel chaotic. It can help when it feels like no one around you understands what it’s like to be you and when the way you feel makes no sense. I use a combination of verbal and non-verbal, techniques to help you into your truest, clearest self.

Are you, or someone you love, struggling with anxiety and/or depression? Has avoidance, self-harm, or self-sabotaging behaviours become the only way of coping with what feels like a storm of uncomfortable thoughts and feelings? If so, then I also imagine that you, or a loved one, are struggling with self-esteem and maintaining healthy relationships with people, places, and activities, that used to feel meaningful. I work with teens and adults who feel stuck, lost, or overwhelmed, and want to work with a professional to help them safely explore, and move through, their mental health challenges, and/or distressing lived experiences.

In this rapidly changing world, we are faced with many challenges. We can become overwhelmed with our capacity to bounce back from setbacks and disappointments, leading to greater worry, stress, and anxiety. You may feel you are stuck, confused, or even isolated; not surprisingly, these feelings can also impact our sense of purpose and well-being, especially in these confusing times. Counselling can provide a safe, secure, and confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, offering support and guidance in the best way to move.

I realise that people coming to counselling – especially for a first meeting – may be feeling anxious so I will aim to be welcoming and put you quickly at ease.
So often in our lives we reach a place where we are struggling in some capacity or another. It may be a deep-rooted issue that goes back to childhood, a past relationship or a trauma. It may be some destructive behaviour such as a form of self-harm or an eating disorder. It may be a negative thought process that is having an impact on our daily life. Whatever the issue, I believe counselling can help. Having a place where we can allow ourselves time and a calm space to think, talk and work things out can be absolutely priceless.

I have worked with a wide range of issues including, depression, anxiety, stress, low-self esteem, trauma, relationship issues, addictions to name just a few.
I work very openly with my clients and believe the most important thing is to build a good relationship between counsellor and client, a relationship where you can feel secure, accepted, and heard. Through this relationship, awareness of how we feel  can be found and with that  a healthier way of managing our behaviours can be found.

I am on leave throughout August, but can be in contact with you in September. You may be here because you want to feel better. It could be that you are struggling with an immediate life problem such as a specific anxiety, depression or life situation that you need someone to help you with. Or it may be a general feeling that something in life doesn't seem right and you want to explore it. Making sense of it can be difficult on your own. Through counselling, I can help you make sense of what is happening so that you can start to feel more like the person that you want to be.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
