Having experienced at first hand the hugely positive impact counselling has had on my own life, I chose to train as a psychodynamic therapist to help others experience the same profound benefits. I now use an integrative approach, which has enriched my work with clients. Working with you, we will together examine and uncover often unconscious or repressed memories which in turn can drive unhelpful patterns of behaviour. We will explore the sources of your problems and aim to deal with the underlying issues, not just try to find a way to cope with them. Only by making peace with the past can you look forward to a happy future.

Are you are anxious, depressed, stressed and struggling to cope? Are you feeling that old issues and feelings are overwhelming you? As an EMDR Practitioner, I can help with these unmanageable feelings. In an initial session we can discuss your problems, your goals and work out a treatment plan. I offer EMDR and we target specific traumatic experiences and symptoms. A large body of neuroscience research has found that working at a subcortical level, using EMDR, effectively reprocesses experiences that are stuck in your body and your nervous system. After EMDR you are likely to feel much less dys-regulated.

Choosing the right therapist can feel impossible especially when you're already feeling low, overwhelmed or disconnected. I offer a free first session so you can meet me and see if you think you'd like to work together. I’m down to earth and approachable and will create a supportive space for you and all your feelings so you can explore whatever it is that’s weighing you down. I want you to feel truly seen and heard. Often that’s all it takes to find a fresh perspective but I can also push and challenge you to help break away from whatever it is that’s been holding you back. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long. Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

Hello and a warm welcome. Sometimes it can be hard to find the right counsellor, especially if you are feeling lost, anxious, low or completely overwhelmed by life. The process of finding someone who you feel comfortable with can be confusing and perhaps a little daunting and yet it is so important to find the right person for you. I hope this goes some way to helping you making that decision. Something may have happened in your life such as a loss, a traumatic event, a relationship breakdown, or you may just feel you have ‘lost’ yourself along the way. Perhaps you feel lonely, confused, trapped or in complete despair?

My ideal client would be someone who already knows themselves a little, has possibly been in therapy before, so understands the path ahead. Someone who is emotionally intelligent and truth seeking; perhaps someone who seeks a deeper understanding of themselves, their context and their relationships.

Specialist counselling service for women. Maybe you’ve been through a difficult patch recently, and you’re feeling low or anxious. Maybe you don’t really have anything specific to talk about, just a general feeling of not-quite-rightness. Or maybe you’ve been through something traumatic in your past that seems to affect you in your life today. I want to support my clients to find a way to live more deeply, with meaning and purpose and clarity, alongside the many and varied losses in every life. When we are able to be as we are and feel as we feel, then I believe we all are the stronger for it.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 10 years experience. I work full-time seeing individual adult clients (only) and I hope that my approach is experienced as warm, non-judgmental and relational. Whatever has led you to look for a therapist today, my own view is that current persistent difficulties in life have their roots in the past. And I believe that it is only by getting underneath these symptoms and trying to understand where they come from that real and lasting change can take place. But just to sit with someone who will listen attentively and without judgement can be a completely new experience for many people.

Sometimes children and young people can behave in ways that are difficult to understand. As their parents/carers, we can feel confused as to what might be happening for our child and how we can best help them. Your child might be behaving in ways that frighten you (e.g. violent outbursts or self-harming behaviours) or in other ways that concern you (e.g. increasingly anxious or withdrawn behaviour, refusing school etc.). You may have attended parenting courses, read books or spoken to friends/family, but still feel at a loss as to what to do to help your child and how to feel connected to them again. Now is the time to seek help.

At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed, angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

As I work relationally and with unconscious processes I work well with any presenting issues that are related to attachment. These may be experienced as anxiety, depression, OCD, bereavement issues, substance use etc. You may have difficulties forming meaningful lasting relationships or have recognised a pattern in things going wrong in your life which make you unhappy. You may have current issues with your children that are echoing past hurts of your own that need attending to. I can help you to explore these issues within the safe and holding relationship that we can create together.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
