Children and teenagers significantly benefit from counselling therapies, which studies demonstrate are highly effective both in the short and long term. For older children and teenagers, talking therapy offers a unique, safe space to explore and understand feelings of sadness, anger, or anxiety. Younger children can benefit from a combination of play and talking therapy to help them process difficult experiences.
Defense mechanisms often develop as a way to protect ourselves from painful or difficult experiences, and these can lead to issues at home, school, and in relationships. Understanding the underlying reasons for our behaviours can facilitate positive changes, benefiting both the individual and the people around them.
Because my clients are young people, it's important for me to develop a relationship with parents. I usually begin with an online face-to-face consultation for me and parent(s) to talk about what's been going on, and what the hopes and aims of the whole family are. Together, we make a plan for how best to proceed, at the right pace, for the best outcome.
