Kia ora koutou. Sometimes everything can get too much and is hard to navigate. Sometimes the inside gets really noisy, and it becomes hard to operate. It is completely normal to experience and to get stuck in these times or perhaps notice some unhelpful patterns of behaviour. I'm passionate about supporting people to find their way through these times. Together we will explore your world. To help you understand where you are; see different perspectives; and help you find practical solutions; that will initially help you cope and then begin to move forward.

Do you feel like your mind and body are being hijacked by recent or old traumatic events? Do you feel like you lose control of your thoughts and behaviour? Are you being held back from living the life you want? Of being the parent, partner, colleague or leader, you want to be? You are frustrated that you can't shake it off? It's exhausting and affecting your relationships and coping skills. You just want to be free of it and get on with your life. You may also be holding back from getting professional support because you can't bear to talk about it. What if you could resolve this with minimal talking and time?

Having been trained not only as a psychotherapist but also as a Yoga psychology teacher, I believe that the events we have been through are part of our soul's journey towards wholeness. By learning from our experiences and transcending our suffering, we become more conscious, awaken our inner light, find our purpose, and discover our qualities and gifts. My approach combines the sciences behind Western psychologies (psychodynamic, transpersonal, etc.) with the wisdom behind Eastern traditions/ philosophies (Yoga psychology, mindfulness, etc). If that resonates with you, I am happy to assist you on your journey.

I currently offer: online 1:1 therapy to adults; & a live, small group coaching program for women to break free of good girl syndrome called 'Free to Be Me'.
Do you remember a time when... life felt good, easy and familiar? When struggle, mistrust and that sense of feeling lost in it all weren’t the “norm”? Do those days feel like a distant memory? Hi, I'm Joanne Deaker and I help people like you break free of 'good girl syndrome' so they can unapologetically be themselves and enjoy life like they were meant too. I also specialize in divorce recovery. I use creative (arts therapy) and embodied (somatic) processes online, to help you get out of your head and into your body so we can go deep, get to the root of your challenges and move them.

I understand that each person is unique and there are also patterns that can make life difficult for us. My focus is to help you discover and move towards your goals, values, and a life that feels meaningful to you. I provide a safe, inclusive space for you to figure things out. I will listen and work with you to understand how patterns of coping (that might have been helpful in the past) are making life feel difficult for you today. I have experience working with adults and young people presenting with a range of challenges including anxiety, depression/low mood, trauma, PTSD, stress, offending behaviours, and life changes.

I have experience working with people who are on their healing journey from childhood harm, adult sexual assault and domestic violence. I support people to through a non-judgmental and trauma-informed approach. I will support you to understand what has happened, and plan a life forward that can be full of purpose. I also supervise clinicians in their practice. As a Community Psychologist, I take a ecological approach, meaning we look at more than just the individual. I also work with clinicians who are having difficulties in their current work related to their own history of trauma.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
