For over thirteen years, I've been seeing clients (both individuals and couples) and my goal has always been to help them achieve meaningful change, whether in getting through a difficult current situation or wanting to break old patterns that keep them from living a more fulfilling life. Some challenges I've helped people overcome include anxiety, depression, relationship issues, feeling stuck in a rut, grief, hopelessness, self-esteem issues, and work-related stress. Exploring these issues with a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental therapist can really help.

I provide an environment that allows honesty, authenticity, insight, and engaging feedback to guide and nurture a meaningful and trusting therapeutic relationship.
I believe that through real connection and authenticity, we can get to know ourselves in a deeper way in order to make lasting and impactful change. I have experience working with individuals, couples, and families from a variety of backgrounds, and extensive experience working with diverse populations. I have a particular interest in working with individuals struggling with relationships and intimacy, individuals navigating difficult family/parenting dynamics, individuals who feel they would like a richer and more meaningful connection to others, and those struggling to find acceptance of and confidence in their own humanity.

I am a trauma specialist working with developmental, relational, and shock traumas. Relationship is what we long for from our deep selves. From birth, our instinct is to connect in order to feel safety, comfort, and wholeness. This yearning moves with us throughout our lives. Connection gives us a sense of belonging and of being "okay". Be it the relationship with self, body, others, and life experience, the connection and flow of it is vital for healthy functioning. When the connection is blocked, frozen, or severed, a whole-self cannot thrive. Reconnecting is essential for our authentic self-expressions.

For couples, we’re a good fit if you and your partner(s) want to: create or restore a healthy, satisfying sex life; improve emotional connection; explore how your relationship history may contribute to current problems; stop struggling with defensiveness and arguments that go nowhere; take risks and go outside your comfort zone to find solutions.
I am interested in all pieces of your life and leave no stone unturned in learning who you are and what you have experienced. I will look for patterns and draw connections in your thoughts, feelings and behaviors to offer you new ways to understand yourself. I love to solve puzzles and am therefore always exploring how each thought, feeling and experience fits into the big picture that is you. I am curious and empathetic with a genuine passion for helping people heal and grow. All I ask is for you to be committed to this process. Good therapy can bring about deep, profound, lasting change but it does not happen overnight.

I work with people who felt stuck while experiencing a challenging moment in life, such as the end of a relationship, job, or living arrangement, personal, generational, and professional changes, gender issues, sexual identity, gender transition, shifts in the relationship with substance use and irresistible urges and behaviors.
As a post modern thinker, I believe that each person has the skills and strengths to create an affirmative narrative, that is not based on negative self-talk or unproductive messages. I like holding conversations that will spark curiosity and explore opportunities to author your new stories.

Your needs and goals might include how to find balance in daily life, resolving relationship or family conflicts, questioning gender, processing trauma, or how to best navigate any of life's transitions. I allow what comes up in the room to guide how we will work together--which might mean we look at and process the past, or stay in the here-and-now, or a combination of both. I approach each client anew, drawing on a number of modalities with the understanding that each person's needs are unique.

I use a hybrid mindfulness-based and psychodynamic approach to help clients develop a healthier relationship with their own thinking to address unprocessed emotions and traumas, and begin taking more healing, nourishing and transformative actions in their lives.
Does it feel like your mind is dragging you down the street sometimes? Thinking has so many undeniable benefits, yet the human mind can often feel like more of a tyrant than an advocate.

My general practice includes counseling where finances are a significant trigger for self criticism or conflict in a relationship; also in families where either silence/withdrawal on the one hand or conflict on the other eat away at the fiber of the household or family business.
See my website rogerschwarz.com, including the video, about who I treat and how I work. I welcome you if you're at that point where you just don't want to continue feeling the same lousy way so much of the time. Usually that's caused by not being able to stop getting triggered no matter how much willpower you muster. It's hard to stay positive when the triggering constantly leads to predictable behavior that leads to predictable, hurtful results.

My practice is based on an integrative model that privileges contemporary relational theory and practice. I work with a range of issues with individual adults, couples and families, and have a particular interest in working with artists, writers, and intellectuals. When choosing a psychotherapist, it is important to find a good fit - someone you feel comfortable with. Psychotherapy is at best a healing and transformational journey that allows you to have healthier and more satisfying relationships with yourself and others. A good relationship with your therapist is the most important factor in a successful outcome.

Integrating an eclectic, strength-based approach incorporating mindfulness, narrative, psychodynamic, and CBT techniques, I believe that being direct (without being confrontational) is essential to a successful therapeutic relationship.
We all experience times when we've felt frustrated, stuck, or dissatisfied with our lives and what we want or how to move forward. While some clients are looking for immediate solutions, others want to explore the “why” behind it all. I believe we can focus on both. We'll move at your pace to understand what isn't working and why. My goal is to help you learn ways to tackle life's challenges, slow down, and feel more connected with your emotions. I'm also very passionate about helping couples seeking to improve their communication and reduce conflict leading to increased intimacy and connection.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
