Although I specialize in eating disorders, I also help individuals with body image issues, motivation for change, improving confidence, and reframing anxious or depressive thinking.
Often when transitioning to a new area in life, such as a career, geographical location, or relationships, it is not uncommon to struggle with changes. I help my clients, including adolescents, adults, and families, to work toward creating a healthy pattern of behaviors that allow them to reach their goals. My therapeutic approach focuses on building confidence, reducing anxiety and depression, and exploring opportunities for growth. Therapy is a nonjudgmental space that is created for each person’s individual needs.

My specialties include developmental and complex trauma, eating disorders, and medical trauma.
I recognize the impact of trauma in my client's lives and seek to help them embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery. Many of the clients I support are dealing with the effects of past traumas, which may manifest as emotional distress, physical symptoms, or challenges in daily functioning. You may be seeking support for managing body-based distress and are open to exploring body-based tools for healing outside of cognitive therapy. Many of the modalities I use are based on the understanding that trauma is not only a psychological experience but also a physiological one, involving the body's nervous system.

Through years of working with clients in various settings, I have extensive experience treating addictions, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression.
Everyone needs a little extra support from time to time, and often reaching out for that help can be confusing and anxiety provoking. I find a combination of empathy, humor, respect, and a touch of irreverence helps put people at ease.

Eating disorders are complicated, and I do not follow a "one-size-fits-all" approach to treatment.
Maybe you are dealing with new issues, or maybe you have been struggling for a long time. Reaching out for help takes courage, and I understand that taking that first step can be scary. Let's talk and see how we can work together to get you to feeling like yourself again. Everyone has a unique story, and through our work, we will discover what is currently keeping you feeling "stuck." In order to change your unwanted behaviors, we must first uncover what is driving these behaviors. The answer might feel obvious to you, or you might feel completely unsure. No matter the case, we will work together to create sustainable change.

In addition to eating disorders and relationships, I treat trichotillomania (hair pulling), skin picking and insomnia.
Having trouble finding, maintaining a relationship? Do you struggle with emotional eating and body image/self-esteem? See me quoted in New York Post, "Is This The Most Dangerous Diet Ever?" by Doree Lewak. Are you pulling your hair out? Trouble sleeping? Feeling stuck, hopeless? I'll help you get what you want sooner, using a variety of techniques to overcome your problems. It may be scary to reach out for help, but it's so much better than continuing down the same unsatisfying path. I listen actively and respond immediately to your concerns with warmth, understanding, and practical suggestions.

While my specialty is Eating Disorders, I also help individuals better cope with anxiety, manage life transitions, and develop a healthier sense of self.
Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, you are unable to see yourself as more than a body? That diet culture is so deeply ingrained in our society that it feels impossible to escape? You are not alone. We live in a world that has convinced us that pursuing an unrealistic thin ideal is the key to happiness. That if we "work hard enough," that void we constantly feel, will eventually go away. That's why my goal is to help you reach a place of acceptance so that you can experience a more fulfilling life, free from diet culture and the toxicity that ensues.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
