I am a Cognitive Behavior Therapist (CBT) and I specialize in treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. I have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years and I have helped a lot of people get better so they can live more meaningful and productive lives. My job is to help you feel less distress so that you can do the things you want and need to do. If you are looking for a "no nonsense", short-term, targeted, and evidence based treatment, then I am probably the right therapist for you. I also provide longer term treatment and support if needed. I will do everything I can to help.

Being a therapist is both a blessing and something I cherish. Do you feel so depressed you stopped doing many things and feel stuck? How about experiencing a fast heartbeat, racing thoughts with overwhelming anxiety? When you live with these emotions, they can impact nearly every area of life. Together, we will carefully explore your experiences to collaborate and find a more fulfilling existence. People come to me with a wide range of issues and challenges that threaten their world. When the truth unfolds...these may include struggles with a feeling of being stuck in their personal or professional growth.

Some experiences in life are beyond our ability to deal with. The approaches I excel in are rooted in intention and reflection gained from my years as a contemplative monk. When we meet, I will help you encounter yourself in a new way and accompany you as you explore different aspects of yourself. Together we will create an action plan to identify the necessary steps forward and work toward them. Whether we talk through your concerns, utilize Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), explore hypnosis and subconscious resolution work, or engage in HeartMath and contemplative practices, a new beginning is approaching!

While my most extensive experience is in addictions treatment and substance abuse counseling, I have a passion for trauma, mental health, and family therapies as well. Even from my early beginnings in this career, my focus and ultimate goal has always been to help people from every walk of life, no matter their history or background. I prioritize getting to know my clients as individuals and tailoring my treatments specifically to each one. I take a “whole life” approach, focusing not only on personal issues, but taking a deep look into relationships with family and friends, ideas of value systems, and beliefs about oneself.

Many clients remark about how good the "energy" feels here.
Sometimes you need a good listener who won't judge you, who will really listen to understand, and not rush in to fix things. When you're going through a rough time, you need to be treated with care, respect and kindness. I tell new clients: "I am here to listen and understand, and when your ready to explore solutions just let me know." There have been many new, positive and effective innovations in the field of therapy. See reviews by real clients at https://www.healthgrades.com/providers/walter-botkin-2rsmb Check out my website at wbotkin.com.

The pain of trauma, depression, anxiety and the manner in which it demonstrates itself can be overwhelming.
Because of my many years of working in addictions treating associated issues with anger, relational conflicts, domestic violence, depression and anxiety, I understand how addictive, dependent behaviors wreak havoc on the abuser and those who love them. My mission is to provide for you peace in the midst of storm. My desire is to help you live the life you want resolving the consequences of the behavior(s) you have chosen; to have the relationships where you are loved and are capable of loving that you want and need.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
