My approach draws on one's strengths to overcome obstacles to a more authentic and fulfilling life. I believe it is important to take time to fully understand an individual's unique life and concerns. The most common concerns clients come to discuss involve relationship difficulties and/or feelings of distress, worry, or sadness. Many of my clients are feeling intense stress due to changing life circumstances. Through therapy new perspectives and ways of coping and/or solving problems can be found.
I have a warm, practical, nonjudgmental approach. I frequently assist individuals who desire improved self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-knowledge. When problematic patterns have persisted over time I believe it is helpful to explore the importance of earlier life experiences.
I enjoy working with older adolescents, college students, and adults of all ages. I am LGBTQ affirmative. I was employed at Duke University for more than twenty years and have specialized experience with workplace concerns in medical and academic settings. I also have specialized experience in substance abuse.
